Trump Renounces Birtherism
The Godfather of Obama Birtherism has finally surrendered.
But, like anything else Trump does he manages to misrepresent facts and create controversy on the way out.
The statement gives the impression that once Obama produced the requisite birth certificate that Trump was fine with it. That is simply not the case. Trump attacked the birth certificate as a fraud.
Let’s not forget that Trump did more that force Obama to produce a birth certificate, he claimed he sent investigators to Hawaii and promised a bombshell:
“I am saying I want to see the birth certificate. It’s very simple. I want to see the birth certificate. How come his own family doesn’t know which hospital he was born in? How come — forget about birth certificates. Let’s say there’s no birth certificate. How come in the hospital itself, okay? This is one of the…in the hospital itself, there’s no records of his birth. In other words, it doesn’t say how much they paid, where is the doctor, here’s your room bill.”
Meredith Vieira: “You’ve been privy to all of this, to know this?”
Donald Trump: “Well, I have people that actually have been studying it and they cannot believe what they’re talking.”
Vieira: “You have people now out there searching — I mean, in Hawaii?”
Trump: “Absolutely. And they cannot believe what they’re finding. And I’m serious.”
As recently as January of this year, this is how Trump handled the birther allegation:
“Who knows? Who cares right now? We’re talking about something else, OK?” Trump said during a CNN interview.
The Republican presidential front-runner continued: “I mean, I have my own theory on Obama. Someday I’ll write a book. I’ll do another book. It’ll do very successfully. “
And there is also the doubtful story that the Clinton campaign engaged in birtherism in 2008 though there is no doubt that a lot of hard core Hillary Clinton supporters did push the story.
He also doesn’t address the birther smear he leveled at Ted Cruz.
The media, of course, is livid. But it doesn’t matter:
