Hurricane Matthew blamed for at least 15 deaths, severe flooding | 09 Oct 2016 | A weakened Hurricane Matthew caused severe flooding throughout the U.S. seaboard Sunday, as North Carolina rushed to rescue hundreds of stranded people and the U.S. death toll from the powerful storm reached 15. The slow-moving tempest dumped as much as four inches of rain per hour in some areas. A record 14-plus inches drenched Fayetteville, N.C., where the soil was already saturated from heavy September rainfall. Water rescue teams worked through the night Saturday to save thousands stranded in stalled cars and flooded homes.
