South Park Had to Completely Rewrite Their Post-Election Episode at the Last Minute
Wednesday night’s episode of the long-running hit series “South Park” had to be completely rewritten at the last minute. Variety reports that South Park writers were so confident of a Clinton victory they had already written and shot the post-election episode – titled “The Very First Gentleman.”
Tonight’s episode of “South Park” has been quickly re-written to reflect the shocking outcome of last night’s presidential election, which saw Donald Trump become the president-elect over Hillary Clinton, which has now been called the biggest election upset in U.S. history.
Like the majority of the media, the “South Park” writers assumed Clinton would take the White House, so Wednesday’s episode was originally supposed to feature that storyline. The episode that was scheduled, prior to last night’s turn of events, was titled “The Very First Gentleman” and was set to cover the election results. While creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone were certainly as surprised as everyone else at Tuesday’s results, it is not unusual for episodes of the hit series to be changed and rewritten up until the last minute. The 2011 documentary “The Making of South Park: 6 Days to Air” follows the award-winning team through one week as they prepare an episode – an episode that is then rewritten and reshot in the very last minutes leading up to air.
A spokesperson for the network tells Variety that while the turnaround for tonight’s Donald Trump-esque episode is quick, the writers always work on every episode up until the day it airs.
The new episode is called “Oh Jeez”. South Park is currently in it’s 20th season on Comedy Central.
