Trump Gets His Way On Spending Bill
The Washington Examiner reports that President-elect Trump convinced the Republican-led House to delay major spending legislation until next March. Lawmakers had been working on a long-term spending proposal, but at Trump’s request House Republicans introduced a short-term spending bill to fund the government at current levels through March 31, 2017. That would leave major funding decisions for the remaining six months of fiscal 2017 up to a Republican-controlled Congress and Trump, who has promised to cut spending in order to reduce the deficit.
The short term continuing resolution is a victory for fiscally conservative lawmakers, who also hope to reign in federal spending.
Politico reported that Politico the plan would also prevent President Obama “from putting his mark on a massive spending deal.” According to Reuters, Democrats and some Republicans see Short term spending bill to be “a mistake that could lead to a more difficult appropriations task next year.”
The temporary spending bill would expire in March, right around the time Congress must also approve an increase in the nation’s borrowing limit, and the Senate could be considering a Trump Supreme Court nominee. According to Reuters, Democrats and some Republicans, like Republican Hal Rogers — the U.S. Representative for Kentucky’s 5th congressional district, see short term spending bill as a mistake:
Representative Hal Rogers, who chairs the House Appropriations Committee, expressed disappointment at the decision, which suspends months of work by lawmakers and their staffs on full-scale appropriations bills Congress had intended to enact before year end.
You can translate that to mean they had planned on spending even more.
