Bowe Bergdahl Asks Obama for a Last Minute Pardon
File this under “Silver Linings.”
Deserter Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, has written a letter to President Obama, asking to be pardoned before Obama shuts off the lights and closes the door on his presidency.
Bergdahl was freed following five years in captivity in 2014 when the U.S. gave up five Taliban detainees in return for the disgraced service member. The letter was addressed to Obama and thanked him for making the swap that brought him back to the U.S. He is now petitioning the Justice Department for clemency before President-elect Trump takes office due to the Republican’s opposition to him, according to the New York Times.
Deserter.
I don’t put a lot of faith in Trump to live up to any of his campaign promises, but if he’s got this guy sweating, I can extend a little good will his way.
Bergdahl is charged with desertion and misbehavior.
He is charged with walking away from his post in Afghanistan in 2009. He was captured and held by the Taliban for five years.
A lot has been said about the man in the time since President Obama released five dangerous detainees from Guantanamo Bay in exchange for Bergdahl’s freedom, citing concerns for his health.
Even more has been said since Bergdahl’s father stood on the White House lawn, looking like a true convert to Islam, and spoke the words, “bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim,” or “In the name of God, the merciful, the compassionate.”
I suppose since Obama was willing to make such a trade unilaterally (and possibly illegally), Bergdahl feels he can ask his pal to just pardon him of all charges, lest Trump actually go through with some of his campaign threats.
Trump railed against Bergdahl while on the campaign trail, calling him a “dirty, rotten traitor” and joked about shooting him for abandoning his troops.
I’m pretty sure winning the presidency won’t give him that kind of authority, but if Bergdahl is nervous, good.
