Can We Expect to Hear “Supreme Court Justice Mike Lee”?
OH, what a dream come true this would be!
Utah Senator Mike Lee consistently ranks as the most conservative senator in Washington. How amazing would it be to have another conservative stalwart on the Supreme Court, especially now?
While Senator Lee has expressed that he is satisfied to serve as a senator – a position he ran for twice, and was just reelected to – he’s not going to kick a Supreme Court position out of bed, either.
During an interview with “The Doug Wright Show,” the senator answered the question, as it was presented to him:
“If he asked me that question, I would not say no,” the Utah Republican said.
President-elect Donald Trump included Lee on a list of 10 potential Supreme Court nominees in September during his run for the White House. Trump also released a list of 11 names last May, including the senator’s brother, Utah Supreme Court Associate Chief Justice Tom Lee.
Up to this point, there is only speculation about who a President Trump would appoint, but a prime reason many who supported Trump during the election cited for their support was fear of Hillary Clinton overwhelming the court with far left justices.
This was especially true of the evangelical community.
Lee, who did not vote for Trump, met with the Republican president-elect last month. Trump asked Lee his opinion of possible Supreme Court nominees, and the two also discussed repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act.
Lee and Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, are focused on dismantling President Barack Obama’s signature health care law as the new Congress opened this week.
Having Senator Lee remain in his position within the Senate is definitely a win. There are still so many issues that need his voice. Repealing Obamacare is just a start.
That being said, when so many issues of importance to conservatives have fallen on the floor of the Supreme Court, having a Justice Mike Lee just has such a comforting ring to it.
