Trump and the Media Can Have One Another
There comes a point to where two warring parties have become so absurd that onlookers lean back, relax, and say “you two have fun.” This is where we’re at with Trump and The Media.
And we’re only a little over a month into the new administration.
Instead of talking about policy proposals, or lack thereof, The Media is fixated upon their wounded egos. They feel delegitimized because, well, President Trump said they are the enemies of the American people. No other president has acted in such a way.
On the other hand, President Trump is fixated upon the The Media, everything they say and do, and their obvious dislike of him and his administration. Yes, some of The Media’s jabs are either untrue or below the belt, but good points have been raised, especially about those things which should be questioned.
But anyone saying that either side dominates the arena of truth is wrong, too.
The best example of this is the upcoming White House Correspondents’ Dinner, aka the “nerd prom.” Recent back-and-forth between Trump and The Media culminated in the president’s declaration that no, he would not be attending the WHCD this year.
The Media freakout over it and Trump’s response to this (and many other things) leads me to this conclusion: I just don’t care. They can have one another. They can rip each other to shreds. They can mock away and fire insults. In fact, I kind of expect it, as both stake huge claims in that which is ridiculous.
On ABC’s “This Week” show, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, spokeswoman for the White House, discussed the tension between the two camps, as reported by The Washington Post:
“I think it’s … kind of naive of us to think that we can all walk into a room for a couple of hours and pretend that some of that tension isn’t there,” Sanders told “This Week” host George Stephanopoulos.
Trump would skip the dinner to instead “spend the night focused on what he can do to help better America, Sanders said.
“You know, one of the things we say in the South [is] ‘If a Girl Scout egged your house, would you buy cookies from her?’ I think that this is a pretty similar scenario,” Sanders added. “There’s no reason for him to go in and sit and pretend like this is going to be just another Saturday night.”
Sorry, but Trump is going to spend the night focusing on helping America? Too often the moments when he should be focused on bettering America he often uses to attack The Media. But I guess he needs to look as if it’s a “it’s not you, it’s me” kind of decline. We know the opposite is true.
In return, The Media have a love/hate relationship with President Trump. As much as they complain about him, he is good for ratings, and they can’t get enough of that. He’s unpredictable, shocking, and over-the-top. They hate that, and also love it.
These are reasons why I say they can have one another. Viewing their grossly dysfunctional relationship does nothing for the American people, and so often the behavior from both sides is inexcusable.
Have at it, you two.
