#NotInMYNameWelcome back to another installment of the Watercooler, RedState’s daily Open Thread! Today, we’ve got…
Many of us will recall Trump offering a “Contract With The American Voter,” and I’m launching a new feature to keep track of his progress fulfilling it; present thinking is to focus on direct Executive actions (EO’s and Presidential Memoranda) updated once a month, and then report on legislation only as it’s introduced and progressing through Congress. Day One was somewhat of an exaggeration, but it was still a clear statement of priorities, and a benchmark for scoring the new Administration’s first hundred days.
Trump’s Contract With The American Voter
FIRST, I will announce my intention to renegotiate NAFTA or withdraw from the deal under Article 2205
Not yet fulfilled.
SECOND, I will announce our withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership
Fulfilled January 23, with Presidential Memorandum 82 FR 8497.
THIRD, I will direct my Secretary of the Treasury to label China a currency manipulator
Not yet fulfilled.
FOURTH, I will direct the Secretary of Commerce and U.S. Trade Representative to identify all foreign trading abuses that unfairly impact American workers and direct them to use every tool under American and international law to end those abuses immediately
Not yet fulfilled.
FIFTH, I will lift the restrictions on the production of $50 trillion dollars’ worth of job-producing American energy reserves, including shale, oil, natural gas and clean coal.
Started, with Executive Order 13766 and Memoranda cited next.
SIXTH, lift the Obama-Clinton roadblocks and allow vital energy infrastructure projects, like the Keystone Pipeline, to move forward
Fulfilled by Presidential Memoranda, published as 82 Federal Register 8659, 8661 and 8663.
SEVENTH, cancel billions in payments to U.N. climate change programs and use the money to fix America’s water and environmental infrastructure
Not yet fulfilled.
Additionally, on the first day, I will take the following five actions to restore security and the constitutional rule of law:
FIRST, cancel every unconstitutional executive action, memorandum and order issued by President Obama
Slowly started, PM’s 82 FR 8346 “Regulatory Freeze” and not-yet-published “Reducing Regulatory Burdens for Domestic Manufacturing”. Somewhat excusable given the sheer NUMBER of these, much as we wish otherwise it’s not as simple as “One EO To Undo Them All, just take a Mulligan on the past eight years.”
SECOND, begin the process of selecting a replacement for Justice Scalia from one of the 20 judges on my list, who will uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States
Fulfilled in spades, with the nomination of Judge Gorsuch.
THIRD, cancel all federal funding to Sanctuary Cities
Fulfilled with Executive Order 13768.
FOURTH, begin removing the more than 2 million criminal illegal immigrants from the country and cancel visas to foreign countries that won’t take them back
Started with Executive Order 13767.
FIFTH, suspend immigration from terror-prone regions where vetting cannot safely occur. All vetting of people coming into our country will be considered extreme vetting.
Started with Executive Order 13769.
Next, I will work with Congress to introduce the following broader legislative measures and fight for their passage within the first 100 days of my Administration:
[Legislative agenda omitted in interest of brevity.]
Twelve scorable points, with Points On The Board for eight of them. I’d call that a solid “down payment” at least. Request to Management: Can we please get a Tables feature next update? At the very least, the ability to break this into two columns for “Started/Fulfilled” and “Not” would have greatly enhanced readability on this.
*Note: FMG Publishing giveaways require you to provide an FFL dealer’s info at entry.
This one seems not just apt for describing today but prophetic given that its author lived most of a century into our past…
Everybody gets so much information all day long that they lose their common sense.–Gertrude Stein
