U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has offered to recuse himself from an investigation into the Russian involvement in the presidential election. The offer comes amid the revelation that he had conversations with the Russian ambassador to the United States while serving as a Senator and a foreign policy adviser to Donald Trump.
Via The Hill:
“I have said whenever it’s appropriate, I will recuse myself,” he told NBC News. “There’s no doubt about that.”
Sessions also said he has never discussed “any political campaigns” with Russian officials.
“Well, I have not met with any Russians at any time to discuss any political campaigns,” he said. “Those remarks are unbelievable to me and are false. I don’t have anything else to say about that.”
Reports emerged late Wednesday that Sessions spoke twice with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the 2016 presidential campaign.
Several Democrats and even some Republicans have suggested that Sessions recuse himself. Others, like Nancy Pelosi, have outright demanded that he resign.
