Syrian Democratic Forces fighting ISIS affiliates in the vicinity of Raqqa

March 27, 2017: SDF Crashing ISIS In Tabqa Area

Syria’s Biggest Dam Partially Collapses Due to SDF-ISIL Fight near Raqqa

Media sources said that Syria’s largest al-Tabaqa Dam over the Euphrates River partially has collapsed as a result of heavy fighting between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and ISIL near the city of Raqqa.

The Lebanese broadcaster Al-Mayadeen quoted a source as saying that the al-Tabaqa Dam, which functions primarily as a hydropower plant, suspended service after its control center was damaged by what could have been an airstrike or shelling, adding that technical experts could not reach the site due to continued fighting in the area.

The SDF forces, deployed up to four kilometers (approximately 2.5 miles) away from the dam, plan to seize the city of Tabaqa, which is the last major ISIL stronghold on the way to Raqqa, the de facto ISIL capital in Syria.

The SDF are not in a rush to storm the hydropower plant, fearing that the terrorists could blow it up, according to the broadcaster.

The al-Tabaqa Dam was built in 1970s with the help of Soviet experts to create Lake Assad, Syria’s biggest reservoir, and to generate hydroelectric power.

Jeihan Sheikh Ahmad, the spokesman for anti-ISIL Euphrates Rage Operation, said on Saturday that the SDF forces arrived in the strategic al-Tabaqa dam after heavy clashes with the ISIL militants in the Western parts of Raqqa.

They continued to advance in the region and gained control of 8 villages and a large number of farms in the Western coasts of the Euphrates River after killing and wounding tens of ISIL terrorists.

Other sources also reported that the SDF forces have started offensives against the ISIL in al-Tabaqa city.

Meantime, Talal Salou, the SDF forces’ spokesman, said that the army forces can also join the operations to liberate Raqqa.

Stabilization in Hama. 03/27/2012 – Colonel Cassad

The military situation in Northern Hama by 27.03.2017

Despite the fact that after the breakthrough by militants of the front, there were again heard already well-known cries about “Asad lost,” “the front is falling apart,” “it’s time to run,” the situation is developing more predictably in line with similar battles in September 2016.

Having broken through the front of the SAA, a conglomerate of militant groups at the first stage successfully developed an offensive to the south towards the provincial capital, having achieved significant operational successes – Suran and Khattab were taken, and the threat of taking Mihrad, Maan and Komkhan was created.

The opponent tried to solve the following tasks at the stage of development of success:

1. Surround the garrison of Mihrad.

2. Achieve the capture of Komhana and exit directly to the defensive line around the provincial capital.

3. Surround and take Maan.

The Syrians and their allies almost immediately began to take retaliatory measures. Serious reinforcements from Damascus, Homs and Aleppo were sent to Hamu (in the latter case, this already led to a decrease in the rate of the advance of the SAA against the Caliphate). The deployed troops were put into battle in parts to halt the insurgents’ advance to the south, which poured into fierce fighting in the Khattab, Artsakh and Komkhan districts, which have been going on for several days.

The introduction of reserves into the battle in parts on the one hand made it possible to respond promptly to the actions of militants, but on the other hand it did not allow full effectiveness of their use.

The result of these battles remained generally vague – the militants retained Khattab and Artsakh, but suffered a crushing defeat in the battles of Komkhan, where the local garrison, with the support of the Tigers, repelled three assault attempts.

As a result, the advance of militants to the provincial capital has slowed down sharply, although it is too early to speak about complete stabilization of the front.

In the Mihrad area, militants tried to arrange ticks, cutting off the city from the rest of the territory controlled by the SAA. This attempt is currently suppressed. The group, which tried to bypass the city from the north, was pushed back by the forces of the garrison of the city, and the southern bypass group received a counter counterattack from Marzaf, which reduced the threat of encirclement of the city, which is hanging on the flank of the militants advancing on Kham. In the area of Marzaf, heavy fighting continues, in which the army is trying to completely eliminate the threat from this direction. At 4 pm, reports have been received that the SAA released Marzaf.

In the Ma’aan area, the attempted offensive by the militants choked. Moreover, due to the reserves, the village of Kaukab was repulsed, the control of which created the preconditions for the encirclement of Ma’an, which is an important outpost of the SAA in the eastern part of the El-Latminsky ledge……..

…..Of course. At this stage, the fighting in northern Hama not only hinders the development of the SAA offensive east of Aleppo, but also hampers the implementation of more ambitious plans related to the advancement of the province of Rakka, where the US and the Kurds are gradually developing success at Tabka, continuing to bend the line to encircle the capital of the Caliphate.

It should also be noted that in social networks spread the rumor that there was a friendly firefighter when the RF CC RF mistakenly bombed the positions of the Tigers and there were killed and wounded. Official confirmation of this yet, but of course this option can not be ruled out, in conditions of a mobile frontline and rapidly changing environment. But however, maybe it’s just a throw-in.
