The Attorney General Hypocrisy of Chuck Schumer
I am just a little surprised that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s tongue didn’t snap off on Thursday. During his press conference, wherein he accused Attorney General Jeff Sessions of being a Russian puppet, the New York Senator said that “Because the Department of Justice should be above reproach for the good of the country, Attorney General Sessions should resign. But, whatever one’s views are on resignation, the most important thing we must do is ensure the integrity of the investigation.” Were was this guy when Obama AG Eric Holder ran guns to Mexican drug cartels, lied about it, was censured by the House of Representatives, and then went back to work at the DOJ?
When Attorney General Holder committed impeachable offenses, Chuck Schumer accused his detractors of racism. When Attorney General Loretta Lynch met in a private plane with former President Bill Clinton, while Hillary was under FBI investigation, Schumer said “She’s an honorable person, we know that, she has said nothing was discussed related to the investigation. So you have two choices — to say this didn’t matter or she’s lying. I think it didn’t matter. I don’t think she’s lying.” Just days later the F.B.I. discontinued its criminal investigation into Hillary’s use of a private email server to communicate classified information.
Apparently Senator Schumer is not too worried about the integrity of the Department of Justice, just its politicization. The DOJ under President Obama was little more than the enforcement arm of Organizing For Action, and that did not bother Democrats one bit. Now, Jeff Sessions has been on the job for three weeks and the Democrats are piling on him like they did Bush Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Both Sessions and Gonzales committed the same crime: being Attorney General to a Republican president.
In 2007, Senator Schumer attacked Gonzales using nearly the same script as he has on Sessions, calling for his resignation. Claiming that Gonzales had politicized the Department of Justice, Schumer said that “he is no longer just the president’s lawyer, but has a higher obligation to the rule of law and the Constitution, even when the president should not want it to be so. For the sake of the nation, Attorney General Gonzales should step down.” It is pretty much copy and past into the TelePrompTer for Chuck Schumer. The Schumer doctrine is that any Republican Attorney General is just a political hack, while Democrat Attorneys General are always looking out for the good of the country even when they break the law and trample the Constitution.
As South Carolina U.S. Senator Tim Scott said yesterday, Jeff Sessions is an honorable man. He is neither a racist, nor a Russian puppet, as he has been called by the Democratic Caucus in the Senate. In fact, his honor was on full display Thursday when he recused himself from any investigation into Russian meddling last year. I do not recall Loretta Lynch recusing herself from investigations into Hillary and the Clinton Global Initiative, even after she met with Bill on a private plane for thirty minutes.
The Trump Administration and Republicans in Congress must rally around Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Allowing Sessions to falter will put blood in the water, which will further provoke political sharks like Chuck Schumer to ratchet-up attacks against Administration officials and smear their integrity. Allowing Sessions to succumb to this insidious character assassination would set the template for obstructionism and obfuscation for the next four years by Democrats in Congress. It is time to punch the bully in the nose and point-out the gross hypocrisy of Senator Chuck Schumer before he continues on this political witch hunt that distracts from the true target of Russia investigations: Russia.
