Worse Than Watergate: Obama Ordered Wiretaps of Trump’s Campaign
It’s that bad: worse than Watergate. Heatstreet reports that FBI Director James Comey told officials at the Department of Justice that he wants them to reject President Donald Trump’s claims that former President Obama had Trump’s phones and servers tapped during the 2016 election. But the DOJ may have no one to help clear up the matter.
In a move that Trump will no doubt see as a betrayal, Comey contended Sunday that Trump’s allegations are false, and that the FBI did not violate the law – or Donald Trump’s privacy.
But Comey can’t speak for the DOJ, and with Attorney General Jeff Sessions recusing himself on matters involving Russia, there’s no one to answer his request. This has led to even more confusion over whether the Trump campaign’s telephones and servers were watched during the Presidential campaign for evidence that Russia was trying to interfere in the American elections.
For Comey, it’s an interesting turn of events. Last week, Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee were accusing Comey of covering up for Donald Trump, and withholding critical information on Attorney General Jeff Sessions’s communications with a Russian ambassador.

Former President Barack Obama had his administration conducting a surprising amount of surveillance on current President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and transition team, according to at least one long-term Republican senator.
According to Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, the extent of the alleged surveillance was astonishing. “I was just a little shocked by it,” he said.
The senator’s comment came during a discussion of reports that Attorney General Jeff Sessions had met with the Russian ambassador twice during the 2016 election cycle and has now recused himself from any further investigation into the matter. Sessions was a close adviser to the Trump campaign.
Hatch commented on the Obama administration’s involvement in the surveillance as reports by The New York Times mentioned that the administration had run an “intense information campaign” against Trump and his team in the months before the new president occupied the Oval Office.
This also came two weeks after the release of transcripts from Obama’s Justice Department wiretaps of retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, which caused him to resign from his position as National Security Advisor, Breitbart noted.
While this news is shocking, Hatch contended that he was not completely taken off-guard by the Obama administration’s use of its power to track political opponents during the campaign process.
What he suspected as well was that at least some of this surveillance information may have been given to the Democrat’s former nominee for president, Hillary Clinton.
“Yeah, I got a lot of suspicions, but I have no idea, so I am not going to speculate,” Hatch continued.
America’s democracy requires a peaceful transition of power after elections. While the behavior of the Obama administration in this case wasn’t exactly a breach of the peace, it was about as close as you could get without crossing the line. Unfortunately, it’s also what we’ve come to expect from the former president.
