Honeybees have been dropping like flys for the past 5 years or so and the increasing death toll is alarming. Accordingly, military scientists and entomologists have teamed up to discover that it’s a combination of a fungus and a virus, and yes, not that cellphone signal that’s causing the bees brain cancers

Scientist’s think that the combination of the fungus and virus damages the bee’s on a nutritional level, but still there are no solid findings on the exact mechanisms of action. “It’s been known that the fungus was part of the problem, but new software developed by the military uncovered a new DNA-based virus called N. ceranae.”  (leave it to the military—believe me, you have no idea, oh, and neither do I!)
One perverse twist of colony collapse that has compounded the difficulty of solving it is that the bees do not just die – they fly off in every direction from the hive, then die alone and dispersed.
This may be a type of protection mechanism to protect the rest of the hive rather than just a result of  insect insanity.  The bees tend to go far away from the colony to avoid spreading the disease further…..maybe?
See why the honeybees are so important (in case you aren’t sure)
