You could really help your family to survive by having a large supply of duct tape and plastic sheeting on hand. You can use the duct tape and plastic sheeting to keep the volcano ash out of your house. A snow shovel to keep your roof clear of ash that the weight of could make your roof fall in would also be real important.
And you need to be prepared with a 2 year supply of non perishable foods, bottled water and seeds to plant if it ever becomes possible to plant a garden in your area. You must also be prepared to defend you, your family, and your supplies if you want to survive. The strong will prey on the weak and you must keep this in mind.
