Camping can be a lot of fun and you and your family can learn a lot of survival skills while camping. If you CLICK HERE you will find the ultimate collection of Camping Tips and other great information that I bet you never thought of. Things like saving all your old cardboard toilet paper tubes and filling them with dryer lint to use to start fires with in a hurry. These are really great to use to build a fire with.
Camp Fire Starting Basics
Use one or two of the cardboard toilet paper tubes filled with dryer lint to get a fire going. Put some petroleum jelly in the center inside the dryer lint when your packing the cardboard tube with the dryer lint.
Have a supply of small twigs and sticks gathered up to feed the small fire with and then larger sticks. Have large wood ready to go on the fire next. Do it in this order to get a great camp fire going.
Cook with coals
Start your fire on one side of the fire pit and add wood on the open side. This will gradually move the fire from one side of the fire pit to the other revealing a perfect bed of coals to cook on.
Ballpark the temperature. Place the dutch oven in the coals and then hold your hand over it at the level of the sides. Count backwards by 50 starting at 550 (550, 500, 450) until you have to remove your hand. That will give you an approximate temperature produced by your coals.
Camping tips for building the perfect campfire:
Work on your wood pile as soon as you’ve set up your shelter. Create piles by size ranging from kindling to big logs. This makes building the first fire of the day a breeze.
Take multiple fire starting methods with you on every trip. Some may work better than others in certain conditions.
Smooth rocks placed along the outside of the fire pit ring can be useful for heating hands, feet, or low back while you lounge in your favorite camp chair or useful in “preheating” your sleeping bag.
