In the process of turning this mountain bike into my idea of the “Ultimate Bug Out Survival Bike,” I’ve also tried to keep the cost down. It you find yourself a decent bike, with good bearings and mid to high end components, that you can see yourself riding for long periods of time on a trail, then that’s an excellent start. From there you can add your own DIY rack and homemade panniers, or you can buy them from such places as craigslist and swap meets. Me personally, I wanted to do something like this for a while now, and when I began buy stripping the bicycle down and painting the frame camoflauge, custominzing it, it almost became kind of an obsession at that point. The bike is just great to take out on camping trips and adventures. It’s kind of become my mule or horse It’s still not quite where I want it, but it will be soon. I plan to add some DIY bicycle fenders, a better headset, a different set of tires and some other things…
