(Before It's News)

With technical support scams on the rise, one company is hoping to make it easier for consumers with technical support issues.

According to a Colorado attorney general, scams involving unsolicited phone calls or pop-up computer messages warning people that their computer has been infected by a virus, are on the rise.

It’s said that thousands of dollars can be charged for a diagnostics on their computers and for the pretend virus to be removed. “These deceitful individuals are preying on the fears of Coloradans by selling fraudulent services for exorbitant fees,” Attorney General Cynthia Coffman said in a press release. “Additionally, these scammers can use the consumer’s credit card information to take advantage of the buyer a second time,” she said.

It’s important to understand that genuine IT businesses that provide anti-virus services would never solicit consumers directly in an attempt to sell diagnostic or computer repair services. Given the fact that personal information can be stolen, remote access to a computer should never be allowed without verification.

If you suspect any computer related concerns and to avoid any fraudulent activity, it is vital to have security software installed, up-to-date and turned on. Firewall as well as pop-up blockers should be running on all devices to block any malicious pop-ups.
