Ottawa, Canada, April 25, 2016 – Saree Parry Designs – Decorating Den Interiors (www.Saree.DecoratingDen.com), a leading provider of home decorating services in the Ottawa area, is commenting on some new interior design tips offered by prominent hotel brands.

Interior design is an important part of the hospitality industry, and hotels have their own “design concepts” and heads of design to work on rooms and lobbies. Now, several major hotel chains, including the Marriot and Loews Hotels, have released their interior design tips to help homeowners with their own living space. (Source: Harpaz, B., “What hotels can teach us about home design,” CTV News, March 22, 2016, http://www.ctvnews.ca/lifestyle/what-hotels-can-teach-us-about-home-design-1.2827825.)

“There is a lot that homeowners can learn from hotel design,” says Saree Parry, principal designer and owner of Saree Parry Design – Decorating Den Interiors. “In the hotel industry, interior design is essential to attracting and satisfying guests, especially for luxury brands. There are entire departments devoted to finding the right designs, so homeowners can really benefit from using these techniques.”

With a new Manhattan hotel opening in the spring, the Marriot is using a “surprise and delight” design concept that focuses on bold, extravagant adornments. According to Toni Stoeckl, vice president of Marriot’s Lifestyle Brands, homeowners should consider more than just visuals when designing their rooms.

“You need to think about the function of the room, as well as all the other senses,” says Parry. “For instance, using lush carpeted flooring in the bedroom can not only look great and create warmth, but it can also soften sounds. Consider all aspects of your design choices.”

While the Marriot makes use of bold pieces of artwork and graphics, homeowners should avoid cluttering their space and use only a few key pieces. As well, homeowners should focus on authentic decoration, which might even include premium-quality lifelike florals.

“Art or decorations that you choose should be personal and resonate with you,” suggests Parry. “Filling up an interior with too many different pieces can feel cluttered. Paring down to only a few carefully selected pieces can have a bigger effect, and you can use them to create focal points or a sense of movement within your home.”

While many people know Baccarat as a famous brand of crystal, there is also a Baccarat hotel in Manhattan, which makes heavy use of Baccarat crystals in their art and fixtures. According to Kemper Hyers, who was involved in the hotel’s design, illumination is the key theme of the hotel’s look. Lighting is used to transform the hotel’s design, which is something homeowners can learn from.

“Lighting can dramatically alter the look of a space,” notes Parry. “Often, by using at least two separate types of lighting-general and accent, you can create truly magnificent lighting. Even changing the angle of your lighting or shape of the fixture can have a big effect. It’s something that homeowners have to pay attention to, as lighting that is too harsh or dull can diminish even a great design.”

Loews Hotels has also released a series of videos with handy tips for sprucing up designs, creating ambience, and doing deep-cleans. Parry says that homeowners can learn a lot from paying mind to these hotel techniques, as well as exploring other sources of inspiration, researching design principles, and using an interior decorator to help bring their vision to life.

“Good design is a reflection of your style, personality, and taste,” says Parry. “The same design that works well for one person might be ill-suited to someone else. As an interior decorator, my job is to help people articulate and realize their personal vision. Learn from what hotels and professionals are doing, but always put your own spin on it.”
