Electro-Magnetic Pulse

Great Grand Pappy did not have this burden, his concerns were different and probably far more tangible than some undetectable roiling on the suns surface… but then again, he didn’t have total reliance on electricity.

Today we cannot imagine an eerily silent morning where the ubiquitous hum from household appliances is stilled and the communications gadgets lie still and lifeless around us. How far away is that fateful day? We can but speculate but the probability of having to address such a morning is a certainty.

How will you cope?

Sun flares are not new, only the modern day ramifications of them are. Serendipitously we have managed to avoid an instance  of total electrical grid and communications loss attributable to them, but how much longer can this luck hold out? Whenever sun activity ramps up into the “X” class flare condition do we cast a wary eye at old Sol. In August 2011 we witnessed such a phenomena – a sober reminder of our fallibility.

Sun Emits an X-Class Flare On August 9, 2011

On August 9, 2011 at 3:48 a.m. EDT, the sun emitted an Earth-directed X6.9 flare

The biggest X-class flares are by far the largest explosions in the solar system and are awesome to watch.

Loops tens of times the size of Earth leap up off the sun’s surface when the sun’s magnetic fields cross over each other and reconnect. In the biggest events, this reconnection process can produce as much energy as a billion hydrogen bombs.

If they’re directed at Earth, such flares and associated CMEs can create long lasting radiation storms that can harm satellites, communications systems, and even ground-based technologies and power grids. X-class flares on December 5 and December 6, 2006, for example, triggered a CME that interfered with GPS signals being sent to ground-based receivers.

This particular flare fell short of dealing the electronic death blow, yet it does suffice to remind us that since the time science realized the ramifications of such ejections no attempt has been made to harden our electrical and communications infrastructure against them, we are literately engaged in a “nail biting” game of Russian roulette when it comes to self-perpetrated risk taking, our attitude is far beyond cavalier in this regard.
I write about this high probability risk quite often and it is probably a good time to review.

Beyond Prophecy: EMP Attacks—What the U.S. Must Do Now
Nov 28, 2010

I have written about this topic several times in the past – I am inspired to write about it again since yet another well considered warning has been issued by seemingly knowledgeable and credible sources – EMP whether…

EMP Threat – Upgraded! June 4, 2010: Earth and space are about to come into contact in a way that’s new to human history. To make preparations, authorities in Washington DC are holding a meeting:..

Beyond Prophecy: The Day The Grid Stood Still
May 19, 2010

The more I look around the more I see reference to the threat of EMP, even NASA has outright entertained the threat as being “imminent” or at least highly likely, if not from a discharge from the sun, then as a result of…

Beyond Prophecy: Electromagnetic Pulse – Our Tech Nemesis?
May 09, 2010

An electromagnetic pulse (EMP) can be caused by a number of natural and man-made sources. An obvious example of a natural source is lightning. Other natural sources could include geomagnetic storms, and electrical …

As is often said, “Forewarned is Forearmed!”

Stay tuned…
