The Apocalypse is in Style today and when speaking of the Apocalypse you can immediately gather thoughts of 2012. With this Apocalypse come the Mayan calendar and then thoughts come of the ultimate end of humanity. Yet for many today, including those in the church, our version of Apocalypse is not what the popular genre for it is. For John who wrote Revelation, it was an unveiling of Jesus Christ to him and the world. Here the English word Revelation is used for “Apocalupsis” which is a Greek word pointing to a manifestation, something to be revealed, an appearing if you will. Thus for those of us who know of it, it means the actual physical return of our Lord to this earth. Here in John the Revelation was communicated to him by an otherworldly being, namely Jesus Christ who was by now glorified.
In biblical meaning the Apocalypse is not an event but a revelation that is recorded in written form. This written form “reveals or uncovers” truths about the past, present, or future. It is communicated or mediated by an otherworldly being to a human recipient.1
In the secular sense of the word, i.e. the popular term usage for Apocalypse means “any universal or widespread destruction or disaster2.” For many today in Protestant circles the term Revelation is used because the bible in English shows the term Revelation as opposed to Apocalupsis. It is here that we then equate the two terms as one and the same. It is equally so that the term Apocalypse is actually a Revelation or revealing. But the world in general thinks of “universal widespread destruction”, hence the “end of the world”. It is true, though, the real truth that disasters will come, judgments will come, and it will look and appear that the world is coming apart [see Isaiah’s apocalypse chapter 24]. However, the real positive truth, and eternal truth is that all this is welcoming in a New World, a New Age, that is one of the Messiach, Jesus Christ our Lord [Yeshua ha Massiach].
