THE EMMAUS ROAD AND THE SECRET TO UNDERSTANDING

WE MUST BELIEVE ALL THE SCRIPTURES, NOT JUST VERSES HERE AND THERE

“Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe ALL that the prophets have spoken:” Luke 24: 25

On the Emmaus Road Jesus told the two disciples that their confusion came from not believing ALL that the prophets had spoken. They knew what the prophets said, but they had not believed every word. They had not assimilated the whole Bible. They only knew parts of it.

It has been my experience that all error comes from not believing the whole Bible. We cannot pick certain verses that support a view and ignore others that seem to contradict that view. We must strive to see how all the pieces of the puzzle fit together to form the complete picture. This can only be achieved by reading the whole Bible through several times.

THE BIBLE IS EASY TO UNDERSTAND, YOU JUST HAVE TO READ IT A FEW HUNDRED TIMES

I want to know what the Bible says, not what someone tells me it says. I pay very little attention to what others have to say about the Bible. That is why I read it and listen to it constantly. I have been through it close to 100 times so far.

Sometimes, something that is said in one part is totally changed in another part.

AN EXAMPLE OF THIS IS THE DESTRUCTION OF KORAH AND HIS HOUSE

In this part it looks like Korah’s children were killed too:

Numbers 16: 27 & 32 “So they gat up from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood in the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little children.

And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.”

Now, if we read on, we find ten chapters later that Korah’s children did not die:

Numbers 26:11

“Notwithstanding the children of Korah died not”

I could give many examples like this.

“Remember the old spiritual…

The knee bones connected to the thigh bone,

The thigh bones connected to the hip bone,

The hip bones connected to the tail bone,

Now hear the word of the Lord!

That’s primitive physiology but good methodology. It recognizes the connectedness of the body, that it all hangs together. There’s unity. So it is with Scripture. The Bible is a sixty-six-book collection, but it hangs together as one Book. Its a unified whole. And that’s the principle on which “context” the second key of biblical interpretation depends.” Howard Hendricks

“We must never divorce one part of Scripture from another, but we must always ‘compare spiritual things with spiritual’ (1Cor 2:13). We can prove almost anything by the Bible if we isolate texts from the contexts and turn them into pretexts…” Warren Wiersbe

THE SPIRIT LEADS INTO ALL TRUTH, NOT JUST A FEW PET VERSES

John 16:13 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth…”

When a teacher/preacher is lead by the Holy Spirit the teaching will be from the whole Bible not just certain parts all the time. There are some teachers whose teaching is always the same; it will be the same subject with the same scriptures as proof texts. This is the mark of a teacher not being led by the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 22: 29

“But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, because you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God.

I did not intend to write this today. I was just going to post the poem at the bottom with a brief comment on my Facebook page. I am working on an article about the Law and how it applies in this age of grace. I am having great difficulty, not because I do not know what the Bible says, but because I do know what it says. The problem is with folks who only know a few sections that others have taught them and do not know about other parts; they are not familiar with the whole Bible

1 Timothy 1: 6-9 “But these teachers have missed this whole idea and spend their time arguing and talking foolishness. They want to become famous as teachers of the laws of Moses when they haven’t the slightest idea what those laws really show us. Those laws are good when used as God intended. But they were not made for us, whom God has saved; they are for sinners who hate God, have rebellious hearts, curse and swear, attack their fathers and mothers, and murder.”

I understand the frustration that the writer of the Book of Hebrews must have felt when he wrote:

” There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen. You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong. Hebrews 5: 11-15

I JUST WISH PEOPLE WOULD READ THE WHOLE BIBLE

” I supposed I knew my Bible,

Reading piecemeal, hit or miss,

Now a bit of John or Matthew,

Now a snatch of Genesis,

Certain chapters of Isaiah,

Certain Psalms (the twenty-third),

Twelfth of Romans, First of Proverbs —

Yes, I thought I knew the Word,

But I found that thorough reading

Was a different thing to do,

And the way was unfamiliar

When I read the Bible through.

You who like to play at Bible,

Dip and dabble, here an there,

Just before you kneel aweary,

and yawn through a hurried prayer.

You who treat the Crown of Writings

As you treat no other book —

Just a paragraph disjointed,

Just a crude impatient look —

Try a worthier procedure,

Try a broad and steady view;

You will kneel in very rapture

When you read the Bible through!”

— Amos R. Wells.
