Will Obama and Europe let him get away with carving up Ukraine?
Vladimir Putin’s Russia seized Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula by force on the weekend and now has his sights on the rest of his Slavic neighbor. The brazen aggression brings the threat of war to the heart of Europe for the first time since the end of the Cold War. The question now is what President Obama and free Europe are going to do about it.
With a swiftness and organization that suggests the plans were hatched weeks ago, Mr. Putin is moving to carve up Ukraine after Russia’s satrap in Kiev, former President Viktor Yanukovych, was deposed in a popular democratic uprising. Russian troops have invaded Ukraine’s territory and now control all border crossings, ports and airports in Crimea. The Kremlin’s rubber-stamp parliament on Saturday approved Russian military intervention anywhere in Ukraine, which is nothing less than a declaration of war. The new government in Kiev responded by putting forces on high alert.
Ukraine borders four of America’s NATO allies, who are watching closely how the U.S. and the rest of Europe respond. The U.S. has for more than two decades championed Ukraine’s independence as crucial to European security. In exchange for Kiev’s difficult decision in 1994 to hand over its nuclear weapons to Russia, the U.S., along with Britain and Moscow, promised to assure Ukraine’s territorial integrity in the so-called Budapest Memorandum. Russia is now in breach of this agreement.
Ukraine has neglected its military, spending a little over 1% of GDP on defense, and would be an underdog against Russia. But with some 150,000 soldiers and a million reserves, it wouldn’t be a pushover. The interim government in Kiev, which was appointed by the elected parliament last Thursday, needs to establish control over the chain of command and mobilize forces. Any attempt to retake Crimea would likely fail, but the imminent threat is in the east.
The Defense Ministry was ordered to conduct a call-up of reserves – theoretically all men up to 40 in a country with universal male conscription, though Ukraine would struggle to find extra guns or uniforms for significant numbers of them.
“If President Putin wants to be the president who started the war between two neighboring and friendly countries, between Ukraine and Russia, he has reached this target within a few inches. We are on the brink of disaster,” Yatsenyuk said in televised remarks in English, appealing for Western support.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry echoed Yatsenyuk’s concerns, calling Putin’s moves “stunning” and a “violation of the sovereignty of Ukraine” in an interview with CBS’ “Face the Nation” Sunday morning.
“You just don’t in the 21st century behave in 19th century fashion by invading another country on completely trumped up pretext,” Kerry said.
Putin said he is protecting Russian interests and ethnic Russians by sending in his troops to eastern Ukraine, but so far there has been no evidence of any threats to those things.

Gee, lets not forget the role of the US in starting all this in the Ukraine?? How about the US role in bringing piece to IRAQ and Libya or how about Egypt? A million kids lost their lives in the IRAQ war? We are still waiting for those weapons of mass destruction that are being joked about or is the joke on the US people? Lets not forget the US role in supporting the Syrian rebels and oh yes their role in Afghanistan and Mali and …. well i guess some people might actually get it except this guy. Pity this one sided article, view and video never mentions any of the above which raises more questions? Poorly done..

Why not, America paid Islamists to carve up Iraq, Libya, etc. America funded Hitlers war, the Russian revolution, and has started every war for the past few hundred years. Who do you think the monsters really are?
The world hates America for a very good reason. I can’t see anyone siding with America anymore against their long term allies Russia and Iran. People are sick to death of America playing spiteful vindictive god with their lives. And then having the bald faced nerve to accuse everyone else of being evil. Eff off.

Every major war began with a seemingly insignificant event. This is over resources. The US is trying to prevent Russia from grabbing any more control over natural gas and oil (Gazprom). They failed to stop Putin in Syria over the bumbled, staged nerve gas attack, so now they are going after him in Ukraine. He knows who is behind it. I would watch this closely.
