There is more than one way for an assassin to destroy the United States. We talked about an EMP attack yesterday, and I believe that this still poses the single biggest threat to the US. But, there are others that might work just as well.

We call it sabotage, and it is the ancient art of a different kind of assassin – the saboteur. It is an incredibly effective tactic, especially when the target country is strategically vulnerable at a single point.
Unfortunately, America is just such a country and wide open to just such an attack. The fact that foreigners are flowing in across the southern border… unchecked …well, it should add emphasis to this point.

We often don’t think of our society as vulnerable to sabotage. Your life follows a weekly rhythm that seems to roll on, almost by itself. It seems unimaginable that anything could disrupt this flow of existence.
However, that unending flow of life was brought to you by the tireless efforts of engineers that maintain the water distribution system, the power lines and communication systems. The road crews, traffic control experts and public transportation personnel make sure that you get to work – and allow stores to keep their shelves full. The farmers grow the food that arrives at your table when you get home from work, and the sanitation engineers keep you from choking on all of that.
All of that (and more) works quietly in the background, so that you can play your own role in maintaining our highly sophisticated civilization.
Eliminate just one part of that, and your life falls apart.
Well, I don’t pretend to know all of the ways that someone could disrupt our carefully organized society, but there is one area that is exceptionally vulnerable to disruption, that we cannot live without:
Electricity.
We talked about it yesterday, and it’s worth talking about it again today – because without electricity, up to 90% of Americans will die within two years.
The problem is that the electricity grid has become deeply interconnected and suffers from an appalling vulnerability:
Electricity Substations
Here is a quote from a March 2014 article in the Wall Street Journal:
A memo prepared at FERC in late June for Mr. Wellinghoff before he briefed senior officials made several urgent points. “Destroy nine interconnection substations and a transformer manufacturer and the entire United States grid would be down for at least 18 months, probably longer,” said the memo, which was reviewed by the Journal. That lengthy outage is possible for several reasons, including that only a handful of U.S. factories build transformers.

THAT is a death sentence. If America is without power for 18 months, you will die. Yes, there are backup generators, and those would last for a few days – even weeks. But, backup generators need fuel, and fuel distribution requires electricity.
And, that memo wasn’t from some minor think tank with an axe to grind. That was from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
Since I am neither an electrical engineer, nor a civil engineer, I cannot tell you how many men – or how much explosive – it would take to destroy these electricity substations. But, it is hard for me to believe that it would take too many men, or that much in the way of explosives. Nor would it be difficult to attack a transformer manufacturer.
The other problem is that there are quite a few groups of people in the world with the knowledge, skill and desire to do such a thing. When I wrote yesterday about an EMP attack, only Russia, North Korea, China, and Pakistan have the ability and willingness to destroy the United States. Not so, when it comes to a determined sabotage of the American power grid.
Every two-bit terrorist group would LOVE to do such a thing, and all that it would take is an engineer, an explosives expert and enough suicidal maniacs to do the job. And yes, powerful explosives CAN be created using household ingredients.
Furthermore, if you corner an experienced civil engineer, he (or she) could fill you up with a host of horrifying possibilities that could destroy America. But, I’m afraid that I am NOT an experienced civil engineer, so I am limited to what I know.
Can you think of any other strategic vulnerabilities in the US?
If so, share it with us in the comment section.
Here are two excellent articles that you MUST read:

That last one is the most vital.
Please, if you wake up one morning and find that the lights don’t go on, turn on the radio. If the radio doesn’t go on, or the radio station isn’t broadcasting – try to start the car. If nothing works, or if there is a nationwide power outage, get to a safe place immediately.
And, when I say immediately, you may only have a few minutes before the roads become impassable – which is also why you must plan now on how you will get around or through impassable areas.
You must have a plan, and everyone who is a part of that plan must know the plan, as well.
With all the foolishness being stirred up by the Obama administration, each day brings us closer to a catastrophic grid-down situation. You must start getting ready now.
Unfortunately, this isn’t an end to the list of deadly threats to America. We’ll talk about one more, tomorrow.
I truly hope that you’ll be ready for this
