What Do You Turn to During Stressful Times? Much Bigger Stressors Are on the Horizon How to Be Assured During Utter Chaos!

What type of stress management skills or habits have we developed? The list of possibilities can be quite long. Here’s a taste:

The gym, comfort food, smoking, drinking, hitting, starving oneself, screaming, displaced anger, the bar, sports, depression, rages, tantrums, drugs, friends, headaches, road rage, throwing, pounding, tuning-out, sex, self-hatred, escape-reading, eastern meditation and yoga, shame, workaholic, escape-travel, cursing, self-centeredness, driving recklessly, yelling, over-reacting, sensitivity, competitiveness, lack of concentration, sleeplessness, obsessive social media, the silent treatment, OCD, drama, intolerance, hair-trigger temper, withdrawal, flipping off strangers, picking fights, people-pleasing, perfectionism, irritability, chronic tardiness, inconsiderate of others because actually, it’s-all-about-me, I’m stressed out already!

Is it to our demise that we have such a variety of “management” resources? I find it interesting that we have so many euphemisms for basic bad behavior or adult tantrums. Goodness knows I’m not immune to it, I do want to draw attention to it though.

I knew I was in trouble when I would get angry over a computer glitch to the point of nearly passing out. Teeth clenched, eyes wild, every muscle tensed, barely breathing, heart rate amped, clutching a white-knuckled mouse. I’m surprised disembodied voices weren’t coming out from me. Stress can be some scary stuff and it can also lead to even scarier “stuff” health-wise and spiritually.  I wasn’t kidding about the disembodied voices, (well, maybe a little) repeated mismanagement of stress can open the door to spiritual influences that are not at all heavenly cherubs with mini-harps!

My pastor told me this story of how one Sunday morning on his way to the church, his coffee was spilling so he accidentally veered into the next lane slightly but was able to quickly correct his position. The vehicle that was in that intruded-upon lane, not even next to pastors car, but back behind to the right of  pastors rear bumper, the driver just flat-out in a milli-second went “road rage” over it. Honking, accelerating to be side-by-side with pastors car, waving the stiff “you’re number one finger” and as the offended party began rolling down his window to address more of his wisdom to pastor’s errant ways, he froze in horror, window mid-level as he looked at the recipient of his tantrum. The road rage-er was the head usher for pastor’s church.

Yeah.  Was God up there smiling, and whispering, “Busted.” or what?

I believe we are all guilty of mismanaged stress at least at some level. But when the headlines are proclaiming yet another workplace “going postal” or school children committing suicide or innocent students getting slaughtered over someone else’s bullying, heads of households murdering their entire family and then suicide over financial ruin, divorce,  too much pressure at the job, or if the meal wasn’t to standard. It’s a shame we have “going postal”, “road rage”, “domestic terrorist”, to name a few, as common lingo.

We all know that stress can ruin our physical health and few consider that stress brings huge significance to our spiritual health as well. Let’s pick just one, one that’s obvious; anger. Unchecked anger is the foundation for the road rage, going postal, terrorism, on and on it goes. It is so easy for anger to get a foothold in our lives but wait, there’s more!  Unclean spirits do not travel alone and the possibility of an entire colony of unclean spirits working day and night to distract us and to influence pressure upon us to sin, to increase the stress and anger in our lives is a very real threat. It is very real torturous bondage is what it is. It’s difficult going through the daily routine with heavy chains limiting and burdening us.

Our military are returning  home from war suffering from post-traumatic stress. Is it any wonder with the demonic-inspired satanic-fueled murderous, sadistic malevolence saturating the very air? If they did not go over there with their spiritual armor in tact, well there’s yet another open door for demonic activity, manipulation and torment.

But wait, don’t despair on me now. There’s hope, there’s help! There is deliverance through Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Whether we are former military who entered foreign lands without the Holy Spirit, or are the over-loaded stressed worker screaming at traffic on the highways who already knows Christ, it doesn’t matter who we are nor what our circumstances, or situation and past.There’s help and hope and protection.

 Acknowledge our need for help, we can’t change what we don’t acknowledge, we’ve heard it before. If we haven’t surrendered our life to Jesus Christ, we’re well past due. If we have Christ but have allowed the pressures and stress of the world to infiltrate, time to mend our fences and boundaries of protection. Life happens, not a single Christian walking this earth is perfect but we are forgiven. Every single Christian were once were not, we had to make the choice to be repentant Christ followers.

When to suspect spiritual bondage? After we have done everything we know to do to change the behavior and we just can not get a handle on it. Try as much as we can to control that rage, that depression, the over- or under-eating and the impulse continues, there just may be more to it than self-control or behavior-maturing.

Getting right with God, changing bad habits, walking away from sin, closing opened doors, staying in His Word, maintaining our dedication in community worship and learning through church attendance, and developing a daily prayer life scheduling God-time and more, are steps towards the improvement in our circumstances. We can’t completely eliminate stress, but stress when dealt with appropriately can actually help us and build enduring character. Get Jesus, then get help from a trusted man or woman of God. Together we can apply the cleansing Blood of Jesus to these bondage’s that destroy everything in its path. He can not help us get free without the Blood of Christ, and we need to seek Him and accept His free gift of salvation in order to be able to apply that saving Blood to our spirit.

The truth of the matter is stated in His Word.  Matthew 19:26  … Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Galatians 5:1 “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.”

Dear Lord Jesus,
I am a sinner that needs forgiveness and I ask You to forgive me. I believe You are Savior and Lord Who Shed Your Blood and  died for my sins to be forgiven, and rose from the dead; You live forever. I turn from my sins and invite You Jesus Christ of Nazareth to come into my heart and life as Savior and Lord. Please, help me to glorify You in all I say and do. I want to trust and follow You as my Lord and personal Savior. In the all powerful Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth I pray. Amen.
