THE DEATH AND RESURRECTION OF THE ANTICHRIST

NOTICE AND DISCLAIMER     I (the writer) am completely knowledgeable the name of the end-times, 70th week of Daniel, world leader is not called the antichrist in the book of the Revelation.  However, the title of “antichrist” is the most well-known and popular designation for the Revelation beast or the Daniel “little horn” in the world today.  However, it is considered a fact that John wrote the three letters known as 1 John, 2 John, and 3 John after the Revelation was written.  Therefore John could have been referring to the beast as the ultimate antichrist when the letters were written.

The Beast     The beast is the name given to the end-times world ruler and the name initially appears in Revelation 13.  Satan coaxes the 10 horned, 7 headed beast from the sea in 13:1.  This will be its 7th appearance with 6 occurrences in the past, one for each head.  I have previously written about the history and background of the beast in a previous post:  The Composite Beast along with other information concerning the beast:  The beast That Was And Is Not .  I will attempt not to repeat myself too much but some repetition may be necessary.

The Revelation beast is actually two entities:  an empire or kingdom and a person.  Both entities are referred to in chapter 13.  The beast empire is the one that emerges from the water or the nations of the world.  The empire beast is a Satanic inspired or controlled organization that appears to always have an effect on the Old Testament kingdom of Israel and then Israel/Judah during the years of the divided kingdom.  According to many commentators these empires include:  Egypt; Assyria, Babylonia; Medo/Persia; Greece; and Rome.  Regardless of the nature of its origin and existence, God historically always used this beast empire to inflict punishment for idolatry and the resulting exile on His people of Israel/Judah.  It has been said that Satan has used the beast in an attempt to destroy or cutoff the Messianic linage of Judah or the Israelites in general.  The final appearance of the beast will be to eternally apostatize the Jews/Judeans/Israelites/whatever; to declare the beast/Satan as “god”; and to destroy as many Christians as are left in the world.

After the beast empire rises from the sea in 13:1, the emphasis is then directed toward the beast as a person or ruler of the world empire.  The beast receives an underling partner called the False Prophet who performs supernatural wonders in the presence of the beast; creates an image of the beast; and causes all to worship the beast or be killed; and give a number to each worshipper (a ticket to the lake of fire).

The Death of the Beast     In Rev. 13:3 the beast appears to have been killed, and the next half of the sentence states that the wound or death-stroke was healed.

One of the beast’s heads appeared to have been killed, but the lethal wound had been healed. And the whole world followed the beast in amazement;     (Revelation 13:3 NET)

NIV     seemed to have had a fatal wound

NKJV  as if it had been mortally wounded

NLT     seemed wounded beyond recovery

RHB   as it were slain to death

HRB   as having been slain to death

GLT     as having been slain to death

HJ3     as having been slaughtered to death

KJV     as it were wounded to death

MLV    as though he had been slaughtered to death

ASV    as though it had been smitten unto death

The Explanation of the Beast     In Rev. 17:7 an angel gives John the interpretation and clarification of the beast (and the woman) that/who was initially introduced in chapter 13.

But the angel said to me, “Why are you astounded? I will interpret for you the mystery of the woman and of the beast with the seven heads and ten horns that carries her.  (Revelation 17:7 NET)

The explanation for the seven heads will be presented in 17:9, but for now the angel is relating the current state of the beast.  The beast of chapter 13 is one John saw and he was there, but then he was killed, and soon he will come up from the abyss.

The beast you saw was, and is not, but is about to come up from the abyss and then go to destruction. The inhabitants of the earth — all those whose names have not been written in the book of life since the foundation of the world — will be astounded when they see that the beast was, and is not, but is to come.  (Revelation 17:8 NET)

Many traditional Bible scholars and commentators will rarely admit the death and resurrection of the beast in writing.  They may hint at it but not acknowledge it.  The usual workaround is to claim the beast is a kingdom and not a person, and if pressed, will say the beast pretends to die.  Some claim the faked death is achieved or executed through a high level electronic system such as a hologram.  They claim that only God can raise the dead and not Satan.  I agree and perhaps God does allow the dead beast to ascend from the abyss/bottomless pit/Hades.

Chapter 9 states that an angelic being falls from heaven and has the key to the bottomless pit.  This being with the key opens the pit allowing demonic type locusts to arise which tormented but couldn’t kill everyone except the 144,000.

And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.    (Revelation 9:2-3 KJV)

The beast will also ascend from the bottomless pit:  Revelation 17:8:  “The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit”.  It is difficult (impossible) for something to ascend from the abyss if it hasn’t first lived and died.  If only the Lord God can raise the dead or release someone from the abyss, then it must be God who allows this thing to occur.  Will this be done?  The writer, Chris White, claims that he believes God will do this and for a purpose:  “God shall send them a strong delusion”.

Even him (the beast/antichrist), whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:  (2 Thessalonians 2:9-11 KJV)

The inhabitants of the world will be so completely deluded they will worship the beast saying, “There is no one like the beast.  Who would possibly make war again someone that has returned from the dead”.

And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?   (Revelation 13:4 KJV)

The proclamation of the populace will be due to his resurrection.  It is expressed in chapter 13 and chapter 17.

The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.  (Revelation 17:8 KJV)

The KJV of Revelation 17:8 uses the word “wonder”.  The Greek dictionaries define this word as:

Strong’s Dictionarythou-mad’-zo

From G2295; to wonder; by implication to admire: – admire, have in admiration, marvel, wonder.

Thayer Definition:  1) to wonder, wonder at, marvel  2) to be wondered at, to be had in admiration

Word Study:  to wonder, marvel, be struck with admiration or astonishment

As seen in the Greek dictionaries, other translation choices could be:  admire; marvel; be astonished.  The NET Bible appears to have the best translation by using the word “astounded”.

Although the scripture of 2 Thessalonians 2:11 is debatable, the people will be given a great delusion by God.  It may be the apparent resurrection of the beast/antichrist and this may be the delusion sent by God.

Seven Kings and Then An Eighth     This post is not about mystery, Babylon, however, the woman (i.e. Mystery, Babylon) sits on seven mountains which are the seven heads:  The seven heads are seven mountains the woman sits on.  The seven heads are also seven kings.  Therefore mountains, heads, and kings are synonymous.  The KJV and a few others say, “There are seven kings” rather than “They are seven kings”, but the Greek dictionaries give the meaning as “they are”.  In my opinion anyone claiming the kings are an additional element with the mountains and heads is misinterpreting and misunderstanding the scripture and the Greek.  This mystery, Babylon has sat on every historic rendition of the beast empire and will be sitting on the last and 7th empire.  The mountains are not geological protrusions on the earth, but rather they are historic kingdoms and the final seventh kingdom of the beast/antichrist.  There is no need to search for a city or area that sits on seven mountains.  Mystery, Babylon is not the USA or New York City, although either may be a reasonable facsimile.

The beast as a person (or entity) is the 7th king.  Nero or Domitian, depending on the chronology, is the 6th king.  The first five kings do not concern me and also there is much speculation as to their actual name.  The 7th king has not come as of the writing of John and when he does appear, it will only be for a brief time as no more than 3 ½ years.  When the 7th kings dies by the sword, he will ascend from the abyss and become the 8th king and will go to destruction i.e. the lake of fire.  Therefore the beast/antichrist will be head/mountain/king number seven.  He will be killed and ascend from the abyss (resurrected from the dead) becoming king number eight and the identical entity as king number seven.  He will two kings, number 7 and number 8, but will remain the seventh head and the seventh mountain.

(This requires a mind that has wisdom.) The seven heads are seven mountains the woman sits on. They are also seven kings: five have fallen; one is, and the other has not yet come, but whenever he does come, he must remain for only a brief time. The beast that was, and is not, is himself an eighth king and yet is one of the seven, and is going to destruction.  (Revelation 17:9-11 NET)

The beast rising from the sea in chapter 13 has seven heads.  The heads were not actual mountains but rather they were kingdoms or empires.  Each empire had a king and the MB woman sat on each of these historical kingdoms.  Although Rome supposedly has seven hills that doesn’t imply the capital of the other 5 kingdoms had seven hills and New York City definitely does not have seven hills at all.  To repeat a previous comment, the mountains are not actual mountains but are symbolic of kings.  The beast/antichrist empire will not have its headquarters capital in Rome, Mecca, or New York City.  It will be in Jerusalem, in the glorious holy mountain and the site of the rebuilt temple or Holy Place, according to scripture.

According to Daniel  And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.  (Daniel 11:45 KJV)

According to Jesus  When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:   (Matthew 24:15-16 KJV)

Some exegetes, such as Joel Richardson, claims that the beast and its seven heads are only kingdoms and not kings, because he considers the seventh and eighth heads of the beast to be Ottoman or Islamic empire.  Chris White in his book, The Islamic Antichrist Debunked, answers this claim.  If the antichrist is a mountain then how does the mountain ascend from the bottomless pit?  Also, recall that the False Prophet is referred to as a “beast coming up out of the earth”.  An exegetical analysis should be consistent across all commentary.

And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.   (Revelation 13:11 KJV)

  • What are the “beast,” the “harlot,” the “seven heads,” and the “ten horns?” We observed on page 458 that Revelation 17 contains a perplexing puzzle. It talks about the “beast” that “was, and is not, and is to ascend from the bottomless pit and go to perdition”; “it is eighth but it belongs to the seven.” “The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman is seated.” They are also “seven kings, five of whom have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come.” Verses 8, 11, 9, 10.

As for the “ten horns,” they are “ten kings who have not yet received royal power, but they are to receive authority as kings for one hour, together with the beast. These are of one mind and give over their power and authority to the beast; they will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them.” “And the ten horns.., and the beast will hate the harlot; they will make her desolate and naked, and devour her flesh and burn her up with fire.” Verses 12-14, 16.

A person is tempted to sigh, “Impossible!” Yet chapter 17 is as much a part of “the revelation of Jesus Christ” (Revelation 1:1) as is any other chapter in the book. There’s a blessing to all who read it (Revelation 1:3). We should make an effort to understand.

Indeed we may find that the solution is simpler than we supposed.

A survey of interpretations. Many interpretations of this puzzle have been offered over the years. One interpretation of the “seven heads” starts with a list of seven Roman emperors as “heads” of the Roman state: Augustus, Tiberius, Claudius, Caligula, Nero, and so on. Another cites a string of successive Roman administrative styles: republic, consular, triumvir, decemvir, and more. Still another interpretation offers a succession of seven end-time popes, as heads of the Roman Church.

Now, in Jeremiah 51:24, 25 and Daniel 2:35, 44, 45, a “mountain” is a symbol of a kingdom or nation. See page 238. With this in mind, one of the simplest of the many interpretations of our puzzle looks at the seven heads as seven persecuting powers viewed from the time when John was writing Revelation.

In this scheme the five “heads” (or “mountains” or “kings”) which had “fallen” (before John’s day) are listed as Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, and Greece. The head that “is” is seen as the Roman Empire, which was ruling in John’s day. The head that “has not yet come” is taken to be the Roman Church, which in many ways resembles a nation and which in John’s day had not yet risen to power. Egypt and especially Assyria were enemies of God’s people in Old Testament times. We are familiar with the other governments.

As for the “ten horns” which are “ten kings,” they are perceived in this interpretation to be the nations of Europe, which in John’s day were not yet in place. The “hour” they were to reign is the 1260 days. This interpretation has much to commend it.

There is another fairly simple interpretation, one which, however, views the puzzle from the end time rather than from John’s day. It sees the five “fallen” heads as Babylon, Persia, Greece, Roman Empire, and Christian Rome. The sixth head (in the end time) “is” Christian Rome in its wounded state, to be followed soon by the seventh head that “has not yet come,” Christian Rome in its revived condition. The “hour” when the ten kings reign with the beast is a brief period at the very end of time when with dictatorial intensity they aid the beast in reviving harsh persecution. For an overview, see charts on these pages.

Three basic questions. There are three basic questions that we ought to ask when trying to understand our puzzle: (1) From what time frame are we to look at it? (2) Are we to use any persecuting powers that we haven’t already met in our study of Daniel and Revelation? and (3) Is the language to be taken as it stands or in an accommodated sense? Let’s look at the questions one at a time.

    1. The time frame. In Revelation 21:9, an angel invited John to watch the holy city come down from heaven. This invitation certainly carried John’s mind forward to the end of the millennium. Similarly, at the beginning of Revelation 17 (the chapter we’re now studying) an angel gave John an invitation to come and see the “judgment” of the great harlot. This invitation drew his mind forward to the beginning of the end time. See pages 422-425.

So shouldn’t Revelation 17 be interpreted from the viewpoint of 1798/1844 and later, the era of the judgment and the end time? This is the time frame for the judgment scene in Daniel 7, the opening of the little scroll in Revelation 10, and the preaching of the first angel’s message of Revelation 14:6, 7, “The hour of his judgment has come.” We have often reminded ourselves that the second half of Revelation, in which our puzzle is located, is concerned almost exclusively with the end time.

    2. The empires. It seems, too, that we should be reluctant to add empires (such as Egypt and Assyria) to the ones that are so prominent in Daniel and in the rest of Revelation. The prophecies of Daniel are our key to the interpretation of Revelation. Daniel gives us Babylon, Persia, Greece, Roman Empire, and the Roman Church, but says nothing about Egypt and Assyria.

The beast of Revelation 17 is the same as the leopard-bodied beast of chapter 13, both of which stand in water and have seven heads and ten horns. There seem to be four animal symbols in chapters 12, 13, and 17—the dragon, the Iamb-horned beast, the leopard-bodied sea beast, and the scarlet-colored sea beast. However, Revelation 16:13 and 20:10 speak of them as only three, the “dragon” (or “devil”), the “false prophet” (which is the lamb-horned animal), and the “beast” (not the “beasts”).

The dragon and the beast, both having seven heads and ten horns, represent one and the same spirit of church-state persecution. (Church-state persecution is a primary concern of Revelation.) Their seven heads call attention to the same sevenfold sequence of persecuting government. But whereas (a) the dragon calls special attention to non-Christian persecution, and (b) the beast calls attention to the old-fashioned Catholic-style persecution, (c) the lamb horned beast calls attention to end-time Protestantism as it finally lapses into a dragonlike, beastlike spirit of persecution.

As for the two stages of the “beast” itself, its leopard-bodied stage (chapter 13) calls attention to persecution during the Middle Ages, and its scarlet-colored stage (chapter 17) calls attention first to its weakness at the beginning of the judgment hour and second to its dramatic but brief resurgence as an old-fashioned Catholic-style persecuting power immediately prior to the second coming.

    3. The language. A third guideline for interpreting the heads and horns, the harlot, and the beast is that some of the language in chapter 17 is used in an accommodated sense. We read in verse 8 that the beast “is not”; yet even while we’re listening to the angel tell us this, we’re looking at the beast through John’s eyes. We can see it standing in the water with the great harlot riding on its back!

In a similar way, the ten kings are said in verse 12 to have “not yet received royal power.” But in verses 1 and 2 they have already as kings gone to bed with the harlot. “I will show you … the great harlot,” says the angel, “with whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication.” So they once did have royal power. In chapter 13 we saw them wearing their crowns during the 1260 years. In a little while from now they’re going to get “authority as kings” again (no doubt as totalitarian states) and rule with the beast for an “hour” (verse 12), during which they will “make war on the Lamb” (verse 14) and turn against the harlot (verse 16). See pages 441, 442.

So the beast “is not” in comparison with what it used to be and in comparison with what it will be; and the same is true for the kings. After a manner of speaking, in a certain sense, in comparison with their tremendous though temporary future reign as oppressive totalitarian states, the kings haven’t yet begun to reign. They’re something like John Paul Jones, skipper of the Bonhomme Richard. As every American schoolchild knows, when John Paul Jones was already well embroiled with the British frigate Serapis he shouted out, “I have not yet begun to fight.” He had indeed begun to fight, but he said he hadn’t, in view of the punches he still intended to land.

The beast an eighth but of we seven. What about the beast that is “an eighth” while it also “belongs to the seven”? Verse 11

Let’s not make the problem too hard. The beast isn’t an eighth head! It’s a beast, and the seven heads all belong to it!

When we add up seven numbers we get a total, which is an eighth number. But this eighth number belongs to the seven; it is sum and substance of the others. When the beast’s head received a “mortal wound,” the beast as a whole was critically injured. And when the wound is healed, the beast as a whole is healed. Of course! See Revelation 13:3, 12, 14.

During the beasts serious illness its lamb-horned rival occupies front center. The beast appears to have been upstaged permanently; but it hasn’t been. In fact, the lamb-horned animal soon offers the beast its services in order to help it stage its comeback. The beast recovers and rises to its greatest power yet, as symbolized by its seventh head. See pages 340-349.

Applying our three rules now, we see that of the “seven heads” the “five” that are “fallen” are entities familiar to us: (1) Babylon, (2) Persia, (3) Greece, (4) Roman Empire, and (5) Christian Rome. By the time of the vision (in the1798/1844 “judgment” era), Christian Rome “is” enduring a critical illness resulting from a “mortal wound.” So we are now living in the time of the sixth head—(6) Wounded Christian Rome—an unprecedented era of separation of church and state. The final head will be (7) Christian Rome Revived—and as it revives, the entire beast (“an eighth”) will realize its climactic self-actualization. The “ten horns,” which once represented the intolerant kingdoms of Europe and which are now more-or-less tolerant democracies, will momentarily become harshly intolerant totalitarian entities.

“The final appearance of the beast will be to eternally apostatize the Jews/Judeans/Israelites/whatever…”

Now is this assertion based on conjecture or speculation? Or is it based on prophecy or something you find in Scripture?

“…the False Prophet who performs supernatural wonders in the presence of the beast; creates an image of the beast…”

Scripture records that the False Prophet ‘causes men’ to make an image of the beast. I raise this point because I suspect it to be anything but trivial. ‘Causing men’ to make the image may well be one of the greatest hints as to the Beast’s ultimate identity, not to mention a key factor in the Beast’s ultimate form.

“They claim that only God can raise the dead and not Satan.”

This ‘temple’ (body) that will be occupied by the Beast is a temple made by man’s hands (per Rev 13:14). This is perhaps something over which Satan could well have the ‘power’ of life and death. It may be a truly living body, but it may have been crafted (DNA engineering) entirely through technological and/or scientific means.

“In my opinion anyone claiming the kings are an additional element with the mountains and heads is misinterpreting and misunderstanding the scripture and the Greek.”

I would agree that this is the only viable understanding of the verse in question.

“The first five kings do not concern me and also there is much speculation as to their actual name.”

It should be recognized that the first of the kings was (almost certainly) Nimrod. This too may well be profoundly important.

    • very interesting WALTER – as i zero in on your reference to DNA engineering. Yeah, in what is going on with cracking the anti-aging gene, the power to live on and on and on is becoming a near reality. Who (or what) will be the first “immortal”?.. and when? How does that figure in to the topic of this article…

  • You quote from every Bible except the most reliable one. The correct reading of APOCALYPSE 13:3 is — “”And one of its heads was smitten, as it were, unto death; but its deadly wound was healed.” (Challoner-Rheims Version)

This clearly indicates a critical but non-fatal head wound that heals. Since the wound is not serious enough to cause death, no “resurrection” is necessary, as your theologically aberrant headline erroneously asserts.

Satan doesn’t have the power to raise any human being from the dead. The mysterious force of life emanates from God alone.
