(Before It's News)

City officials and local media are reporting that shoppers are being evacuated from a Walmart as police respond to an “active shooter incident” in which the suspect is believed to have taken hostages.

The City of Amarillo’s Twitter account asked the public to stay away from the Walmart at Interstate 27 and Georgia Street as first responders are on scene of an “active shooter incident” around 11:30 a.m.

ABC 7 Amarillo reported that police confirmed “an active shooter situation,” that people are being evacuated from the building and that the shooter is “believed to have taken hostages.”

No word on injuries or further details were immediately available.

The report comes on the heels of the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history that left 49 victims and a shooter dead at an Orlando nightclub on Sunday.

Amarillo is the largest city in the Texas Panhandle, with the 14th largest population in the state. It is located about 350 miles northwest of Dallas.
