(Before It's News)

Last week I blogged about Sarah Murnaghan, a 10-year old girl with cystic fibrosis whose life was endangered by transplant rules restricting the ability of children under 12 from receiving adult organs. Yesterday, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen “Dialing for Dollars” Sibelius made death sentence official when she told a Congressional Committee that she would not waive the transplant rules for Sarah or any other child in this situation. Instead, Secretary Sibelius, like bureaucrats always do, has promised to “review the rule” regarding organ transplants for children.

Ludwig Von Mises summed up the mindset displayed by those who would, as Sarah’s mother put it, allow a 10-year old-girl to die for red tape, in his classic work Bureaucracy:

They are no longer eager to deal with each case to the best of their abilities; they are no longer anxious to find the most appropriate solution for every problem. Their main concern is to comply with the rules and regulations, no matter whether they are reasonable or contrary to what was intended. The first virtue of an administrator is to abide by the codes and decrees.”
UPDATE: A federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order exempting Sarah from the regulations. Hopefully, this case will cause people to rethink the wisdom of allowing the federal government to control organ donation.
