House Ways and Means Committee Votes to Block IRS Targeting of Grassroots Groups

SPRINGFIELD, Virginia- Campaign for Liberty President John Tate released the following statement after the House Ways and Means Committee approved H.R. 3865, the Stop Targeting of Political Beliefs by the IRS Act of 2014 earlier today.

“I am pleased the House Ways and Means Committee today approved legislation blocking the IRS’ proposed, unconstitutional regulations,” said Tate.

“These new regulations would, among other things, limit the ability of groups such as Campaign for Liberty to inform their members of legislators’ voting records around an election. This would solely protect elected officials from being held accountable for their actions, while at the same time preventing average Americans from being fully involved in the legislative process.

“The First Amendment guarantees the right of free speech and the right of Americans to petition their government. The proposed IRS regulations would only further erode these rights, which the government has been fighting to restrict for decades.

“I hope the full House will quickly pass H.R. 3865 so a clear message can be sent that liberty-minded Americans don’t have to worry about their First Amendment rights being stripped away when they join collectively to take action on issues they care about.”
