Police in Albuquerque are facing massive protests from the citizens of that city, following a round of shootings.
A recent city council meeting there had to be rescheduled after demonstrators crowded into the room. Nora Tachias-Anaya, spokesperson for the demonstrators, vowed a similar response will greet a re-scheduled meeting.
Protestors at the earlier meeting chanted, calling for the resignation of the city’s police chief.
The Chamber of Commerce called for city councilors to do more to prevent such demonstrations by angry citizens in the future. Terri Cole, Chamber president, told the press there is no way to place a price on the damage done to business by voters expressing disapproval of police shootings.
She said, “We don’t want to send our chamber representatives to an arena that is not professional and secure.”
The U.S. Justice Department recently released a report criticizing the use of force by police forces in Albuquerque.
One of the topics to be decided in the upcoming meeting will be whether the position of police chief should be elected or appointed by the city council.
