According to the National Journal, some GOP Representatives are circulating a proposal to strip any member who votes against the party’s nominee for Speaker of the House of all Committee assignments. The goal of this is to avoid a repeat of the beginning of last Congress when 40 members voted against Speaker John Boehner. Such a heavy-handed move is likely to backfire, as it would led to more division between the establishment and those members –and grassroots activists–who put party over principle.
The fate of this proposal will be a leading indicator of whether the GOP House leadership is going to continue its antagonist relationship with the grassroots or if it will work with us on limited government. Stay tuned to this space for further developments on this subject.
