GERMANY PROTESTS
GERMANY PROTESTS: So-called anti-islamization protests were held in Dresden and Dusseldorf on the night of December 8, organized by PEGIDA, or “Patriotic Europeans against the Islamization of the West”. According to Deutsche Welle, the group has distanced itself from the neo-Nazi far-right and said it is neither Islamaphobic, nor xenophobic, but concerned by issues such as the number of Islamic State fighters emerging from Germany. The protests and the chant used – “Wir sind das Volk” – have historical resonance with Monday protests held during the final days of the communist rule in East Germany.
