The announcement by a New York grand jury, declining to press charges against Officer Daniel Pantaleo in the death of Eric Garner, has sparked protests in cities across the nation in a reprisal of rallies protesting the Missouri grand jury decision not to indict Officer Darren Wilson. Al Sharpton was on MSNBC’s Morning Joe when co-host Mika Brzezinski gave praise to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s leadership in keeping the protests peaceful. Sharpton interrupted Brzezinski’s complimentary remarks to claim credit for himself for the nonviolent march that he organized on Staten Island.
“Well, I also think there are mechanisms, the mayor and others, but I think there are movements that have for months been on this. We had about twelve thousand people marching in Staten Island and people said there was going to be a riot and there was nothing all the way through this. And I think that when you have organized bodies that are there saying, ‘wait a minute, we want to get change, not just…”
”Mika Brzezinski interrupted Sharpton: “We have problems. We have problems.”
Sharpton responded:
“Yeah, we have problems, but we want to solve the problem. We’re connected to the families that are suffering. These are not activists that are looking for political chips. They want to see real change and when you have that, people behave in a way that they don’t want to let that family down.”
