At least five police officers are killed and six others wounded in a standoff with snipers opening fire on them amid a protest rally against police brutality.
Two of the injured officers are in critical condition. Police say two snipers fired ambush-style on the officers. However, a bystander video shows a gunman shooting a policeman at close range. The Dallas protest was part of demonstrations taking part in several cities against fatal police shootings of two African-American men in Minnesota and Louisiana this week.
Similar protests were held in the cities of Chicago, New York, and Saint Paul. The protesters are outraged over what they call racial profiling of African-Americans. In Chicago, the demonstrators briefly shut down an expressway. In New York, people blocked traffic in Times Square at the heart of Manhattan. Several protesters were arrested in New York. Two African-Americans, Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, were captured on video being fatally shot by police. Neither of the victims appeared to be offering resistance at the time of the shooting. Saint Anthony Police Department fired two officers involved in shooting dead of Castile in Minnesota during a traffic stop
