Old Testament Law – What Is The Purpose of the Old Testament Law

The Old Testament Law is Fulfilled in Christ

Math 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

Math 5:17 presents us with a simple yet profound message of the workings of Christ that is not understood by many; what He is telling us is that He is the fulfillment of the Old Testament law and the prophecies; they were all about Him.

So Christ fulfilled the Old Testament law or contract, and once a contract has expired or is completed it is no longer then in force.

Luke 24:44 And he said unto them, These [are] the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and [in] the prophets, and [in] the psalms, concerning me.

The New Testament law of Christ is all about Love, and His Spirit that makes it all possible.

Math 7:12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

This is what Old Testament Law and prophets were all about, to show us the way of truth by operating in Love and not self centeredness.

Gal 5:4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

To think you are justified by the Old Testament Law is to believe in your own power unto righteousness; our works without faith and the truth of Christ are worthless (Phil 3:9).

Gal 5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

To claim to be under the Old Testament Law is to desire to be placed under bondage again; the Spirit is not with the person that does not come to the freedom in Christ (Gal 4:3-9).

Rom 9:30 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.

Rom 9:31 But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.

Rom 9:32 Wherefore? Because [they sought it] not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone;

They stumbled in not believing in the law of Christ, although the law and prophets only existed to show the way to Him.

1 Tim 1:9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

Old Testament LawAll those in Christ hunger and thirst for His righteousness, we never want to entangle ourselves with the Old Testament Law of sin and death, for the new law of the Spirit of life in Christ has delivered us from that curse (Rom 8:2).

Heb 7:11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need [was there] that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?

Heb 7:12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.

The old priesthood was temporal and imperfect, our high priest Jesus Christ is perfect and eternal. We now have a law unto Salvation, built on love.

Heb 7:18 For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof.

The Old Testament Law and commandments were temporal and without strength; they had to be cancelled as they were only designed to bring us unto Christ; they were but a shadow of better things to come that would be realized in Jesus (Heb 10:1).

Under the old priesthood sacrifices had to be made year after year, but Christ was once offered for the sins of all of mankind (Heb 7:27-28).

Rom 13:10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love [is] the fulfilling of the law.

Rom 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

The child of God that understands the word through the Spirit faithfully submits to the new Law of Christ. In the Spirit of Love we can fulfill His law.

Rom 4:14 For if they which are of the law [be] heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:

They which think they are justified of the Old Testament Law do not have any part in the inheritance. If you reject the Spirit of the Lord Jesus, and the power of His blood, there is no covering for you.

Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

Mat 22:38This is the first and great commandment.

Mat 22:39 And the second [is] like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Jesus gave us a new law that could be kept by all through His Spirit of grace and power; it consists of two transforming commandments that surpassed and replaced the first ten; these would prove to be impossible to keep for all who would refuse to put on the mind of Christ.

Mat 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Here we have an example of Jesus Christ already teaching the New Law.

  • It is not a contract it is a covenant.

    Galatians 5

Behold I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you. And I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep the whole Law. You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.…
