The British government is about to reward a Bahrani accused of mass torture with a luxury hotel and chauffeur-driven BMW at the London Olympics. But Britain has just refused a visa to the head of the Syrian Olympic Committee because of his links to violence, and if we all speak out now we can ensure Prince Nasser stays at home too.
Prince Nasser bin Hamad Al-Khalifa is a chief architect of Bahrain’s brutal crackdown — he is accused of personally torturing and persecuting Olympic athletes who have stood up against his father’s dictatorship. But he is also President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee, and is set to receive VIP treatment at the London games. Now, the Syrian visa rejection has started momentum and if we all raise our voices, we can ensure Nasser is barred from the games.
British Foreign Secretary William Hague has said that Nasser will be “closely assessed”, and Avaaz members in the UK and Bahrain have united to start a campaign to urge Hague to keep this torturer out, but we need a tidal wave of outrage to win. Sign the urgent petition now — when we reach 60,000 signatures, we’ll deliver the message to Hague in London
