Dragon’s Dogma is an upcoming open world fantasy action RPG much like Bethesda’s recent master piece Skyrim. The game is being developed by Capcom, so it comes as a surprise that the game has a very western look to it.
Game Features
The game starts off with a very detailed character creator like most other games in the same genre. The character editor offers a wide range of options from changing your characters facial features to altering their weight. There is an impressive amount of options available to the player making character customization a satisfactory and fun process.
Dragon’s Dogma gives you several classes to choose from e.g. Fighter, Warrior, Mystic Knight, Strider, Ranger, Assassin, Mage, Sorcerer and Magic Archer.
Dragon’s Dogma offers you the ability to create and customize your pawn otherwise known as party member. During the course of the game, your created pawn will be bound to you, giving you complete control over his/her look, class, the weapons and gears he/she will carry or the way he/she behaves. You can even chat to him/her if you want. Apart from your main pawn, the game allows you to have two other pawns. These additional party members can be borrowed from other players online or you can offer your pawn to others in exchange for gold.
Combat System
The combat system in Dragon’s Dogma is very action oriented. Players are capable of executing both light and heavy attacks which can be combined to form combos, however, the main combat feature that sets it apart from the likes of Witcher 2 or Kingdoms of Amalur is the ability to grab on to enemies. This gives players a chance to take hold of people or smaller monsters to throw them away or cling on to one of the larger enemies and hack away at its weaker areas.
The game world is huge in Dragon’s Dogma, according to the games producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi “if one would walk around the coastline of the world, it would take him around 4 to 5 hours”. The main campaign requires around 50 hours to complete considering you will only be doing the main quest. However, if the player decides to play through every side quest offered by the game, it can easily take over 300 hours of game time.
On PS3, Dragon’s Dogma does suffer from some frame rate issues and jerky movement during intense combat situations. Apart from this minor technical problem, Dragon’s Dogma seems like an excellent and solid entry in to open world fantasy RPG genre.
