They have been announcing the winding down date of Google Wave for some time now but it is now a reality. It was a platform that was never fully understood and something that was never really explored. Maybe it had to take its shutting down for the idea behind its conception to be fully grasped.
Google Wave was released in 2009 and it was something that had the right idea. It was launched with a lot of fanfare and had a collaborative friendly interface. Its emphasis was on file sharing especially multimedia with lots of plug in extensions. But the service met with the Achilles heels of Google as they went for their distinct online identity that raised privacy and identity issues with early adopters.
The invite-only sign up strategy is something that is part and parcel of the Google marketing/publicity philosophy and it worked quite well for this service. But that was the only thing that it had going for it because once it petered off the service the not have enough depth to continue its drive forward because easy accessibility was sacrificed for intrigue.
Is there any positive legacy it left? The sad thing with Wave is that it is actually better than Google Plus and this says a lot. But Plus still has some mileage left in it and it can pick up if they catch on to something good along the way. Diehard Wave users should take heart and find consolation in another service that is equally as intriguing in Apache Wave.
