We all know how Internet Connectivity in India is abysmal in comparison to other countries like South Korea, Japan and the USA. A recent study by Akamai Technologies, the world’s biggest content delivery platform, has shown just how bad the state of Internet connectivity is in India.
Akamai was able to get the data for these studies through its Akamai Intelligent Platform for the State of the Internet report for Q4 2011. The report goes into details about tracking, mobile connectivity, broadband speeds and proportional Internet users.
According to the report, India have an average connection speed of 0.9 mbps! Besides being a very low figure, it also puts our country in the league of countries like Egypt and Venezuela. The report goes into further detail with analysis on data downloaded per user and peak connection stats. The attack traffic recorded in India for the fourth quarter was around 3%, which was surprisingly lower than the previous quarter’s result (3.7%). The average peak connection for India is recorded to be 9651 kbps in Q4 2011 while the average browsing and connection speed was a lowly 1664 kbps. Q4 2011, during which the data was accessed, showed that 9,602,386 unique IP addresses were present in India. The average data downloaded by a user per month comes up to 204 mb compared to countries like Kuwait (205 mb) and Qatar (215 mb). Countries like Indonesia and Hong Kong recorded staggeringly higher download amounts like 6351 mb and 3308 mb respectively. This just means most Indians only use the Internet to surf website and streaming and downloads are less. We still have to go a long way to go in this regard.
The report says that almost 27% of the country uses the Internet at speeds below 256 kbps. Countries faring worse are Libya (52%), Nigeria (31%), Iran (30 %) and Nepal (32%). Countries like the USA (1.6%) show a stark contrast. India has only a 0.5% of connections which cross the 5 mbps mark while other countries like South Korea (83%), Japan (60%) and Hong Kong (57%) are way ahead of us.
India’s Internet usage is rising with every passing day but the full potential of it cannot be realized due to poor Internet Infrastructure in the country. This affects everything and slows the growth process for the country unless something is done urgently. Businesses cannot realize the full potential of social media platforms and other Internet services if most of the country does not have decent connection speeds. To get our country towards the numero uno position our Government and private Internet providers needs to implement better Internet infrastructure. This is essential because every one now realizes that India is growing economically and this growth would be even faster if we have decent Internet surfing speeds.
What do you think about our country’s lowly position in terms of Internet connection speed? How can this be changed? Share your thoughts with us.
