Android 4.0 ICS is all about on-screen input, so much so in fact that Google moved the dedicated navigation keys onto the screen negating the need for physical buttons (despite many manufacturers still using them). But what if you still want all of the spoils of Android 4.0 ICS and a physical keyboard for mashing out emails/texts like a pro? That’s when you get Kyocera’s “Rise” ICS equipped smartphone complete with slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 3.5-inch HVGA (480 x 320) display, 1 GHz single-core Snapdragon processor, 512MB of RAM, 3.2-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1500mAh battery. The Rise comes with a 2 GB microSD card installed but will support up to 32 GB should your heart desire more digital content on the go. Carrier availability hasn’t been confirmed but the device is CDMA, so look at Sprint as a probable partner come release this summer.
The other device Kyocera announced today at CTIA is the “Hydro”, a water resistant smartphone that can withstand up to 30 minutes submerged in the liquid-y stuff. Like the Rise, the Hydro features a 1 GHz single-core Snapdragon processor, 512 MB of RAM and same 3.2-megapixel camera. Also MIA — carrier and release price. But fret not. All will be more clear this summer once the device is released.
Neither the Rise or Hydro are “high-end” devices by any means. But the inclusion of Android 4.0 ICS as well as unique features (keyboard for the Rise and water resistant properties of the Hydro) should no doubt entice a decent following.
