New Spotify Update Hitting For iOS Today! Bringing Mobile Radio Station Creation To The Masses.

(Before It's News)

I’ve always been a big supporter of Last.fm, especially over Pandora. In personal usage, Pandora never got a grasp of my listening habits like Last.fm. But more annoyingly, Pandora seemed to get stuck in a rut where it would find an artists with many different live versions of a song and then proceed to play all of those live versions in close proximity to one another. The end result on Pandroa was always a lot of skipping forward to the next track.

Along the same line, Spotify has been a pretty heavily used service as of late for me too. For starters, it includes Last.fm scrobbling support on the desktop and mobile apps so I can always keep my music listening history up to date and logged. And today, Spotify launches a much more direct attack on Pandora and Last.fm (as well as many other music radio services) with their own Mobile Radio feature.

For the record, the Radio feature has been available on the desktop version of Spotify for some time now, but today is the first time mobile users can make use of the feature on their phones and tablets.

Like Last.fm, Spotify’s new Mobile Radio will allow you the user to create radio stations built around artists, albums and playlists. Simply downloading the new update (which should be going live today in the coming hours) is all you need, aside from the $9.99/month premium membership of course. On that same note, TNW is reporting that Spotify will soon roll out a free iOS app with the mobile radio option enabled thanks to licenses in the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act). Initially U.S.-only, the free mobile radio feature will be rolled out “over time” globally.

We’re curious as to how many Spotify users out there actually use the radio feature over the normal artist/playlist method. With that said, drop your thoughts/experiences/usage patters with Spotify into the comments below, and let us know how the new update goes for you once it goes live later today.

Android users looking over their shoulder in a jealous rage need only take the anti-depressants a while longer. Spotify has stated that an Android update bringing the same mobile radio functionality is in the works and scheduled for release “in the coming weeks”.
