The Android 4.0 upgrade drama regarding the HTC Desire HD that we’ve been following received the final nail in the coffin going into the weekend. HTC released an official update (again) ruling out once and for all an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for their Desire HD handset.
The reason: because of limited internal memory, HTC would have to alter the sizes of the partitions on the Desire HD’s built-in flash storage, in turn making necessary the deletion of users’ data. (Read: A full phone wipe would be needed.) For techies such as us, this isn’t that big of an issue; upload personal data somewhere else as a backup and proceed. For the general populous though, it would be a rude awakening to find their personal data completely gone after updating from their current version of Android.
HTC also lists other “technical limitations” as reasons for the lack of updates, though they don’t detail those limitations any further.
The argument against wiping the phone is valid but the “technical limitations” verbiage still seems like a cop out if you ask us. That said, those of you on the fence about rooting and forcibly installing ICS (or even Jelly Bean at some point) via custom ROMs can now be sure that that is your only option.
