There’s nothing like rumors regarding Apple products that might never materialize. It has nearly been two years since we have been hearing about Apple’s elusive iPad Mini. This toned down version of the full blown iPad is supposed to do wonders for Apple in the mid range tablet market. However up till now no credible evidence of this tablet has been brought to light. There have only been rumors. There’s a new one today, which suggests that a 7 or 8 inch iPad Mini will be released in October.
iPad Mini rumors have cropped up from countless sources. These include but are not limited to trade publications, industry sources, supply chain sources and even newspapers. Today, Bloomberg published a new report in which it claims to have heard from it’s sources that Apple is prepping an iPad Mini with either a 7 or 8 inch screen. This particular source is credible enough to not float rumors which have no credibility at all. Though the question remains, will Apple release this product at any point in time or is it just developing a prototype for now?
As far as the specifications of iPad Mini are concerned, the screen size has already been given. A resolution of 1024×768 is expected, which would be phenomenal on a 7 or 8 inch tablet. The tablet will at least sport a dual core processor if not more, coupled with 1 GB of RAM. On board storage will be between 8GB and 16GB. Price points are expected to be kept between $249 to $299.
Many people might wonder why Apple needs to release another iPad, albeit a shorter one, when the full blown iPad is doing so well since the very first model came out. Amazon, on it’s own, created a whole new tablet market niche with the 7 inch Kindle Fire. It’s tablet is so successful that it happens to be the only most sold Android powered tablet, regardless of the fact that Kindle Fire runs a very heavily modified version of Android. Furthermore at Google I/o 2012, the internet search giant announced Nexus 7. This tablet touts a quad core processor, a 12 core GPU, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with a starting price of just $199. It’s set to dethrone the Kindle Fire.
So it goes without saying that with a mid-range tablet market so strong, it’s hard for Apple to keep itself out of such a lucrative market. Sure enough, a smaller iPad will do wonders in the market. If the iPad Mini is indeed coming out in October this year, we can be certain that the makers of Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 won’t be happy at all.
