What happens when you release a brand new operating system chock full of impressive updates, powerful new functionality and price it at an affordable $20? You sell more than 3 million copies within the first week.

Just as many had predicted, Apple announced the release of their new Mac OS during their Q3 earnings call last Tuesday. The following day, Mountain Lion leapt into the Mac App Store, accessible from any Mac running the latest 2 versions of OS X.

Within the first 2 days of availability, Apple managed to sell 2 million copies to Mac users the world over.

Today, Apple is announcing more than 3 million copies sold and downloaded in just 4 days.

Just a year after the incredibly successful introduction of Lion, customers have downloaded Mountain Lion over three million times in just four days, making it our most successful release ever,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, in a statement.

With more than 200 new features, Mountain Lion is no small update. Though it closely resembles Lion in terms of looks and styling cues, it functions more closely to an iOS device, something that’s been hotly debated for the past several months.

Many features once exclusive to iOS devices have now made their way to the Mac line. For example, Notification Center now wrangles and stores any notification you may receive in Mountain Lion, such as emails, calendar events and messages.

Messages is another feature which has been shared with Mountain Lion, giving iMessage users the ability to chat on their Macs instead of having to stop and pick up their iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch to text with family and friends. Mountain Lion also brings sharing to the Mac. Now, sharing a website, picture, or most anything with Twitter or other contacts is as easy as clicking the familiar sharing icon.

Another familiar icon which arrives in Mountain Lion is the AirPlay option. Perhaps the most revolutionary addition to Mountain Lion, AirPlay mirroring lets users share their screen via Apple TV, a huge convenience for those who need to give presentations, such as businesspeople or educators. AirPlay is also very cool for those who want to stream all manner of video from their computer to their television.

Elsewhere in Mountain Lion, iCal has been renamed Calendar, though it retains the skeuomorphic leather UI style. Reminders are now available on the Mac and are kept in sync, along with calendars, contacts, emails and other documents, through iCloud.

Apple is offering Mountain Lion through the Mac App Store exclusively and will not be offering a physical disc or USB stick containing the OS. A one time purchase of Mountain Lion allows users to install the latest OS on up to 5 machines, and those who have recently purchased a Mac—on or after June 11—will be able to upgrade their machines for free.
