We try not to get too heavily invested/excited about Kickstarter projects. All too often they either fail to hit their goal or simply disappear into the world of vaporware. But if we had to choose only one Kickstarter project to succeed this year, it would be the Game Dock.
The game dock is the retro iPhone gamers dream come true. Basically, it turns your iPhone into a console, giving you a couple of ports to plug in old school NES controllers and game long into the night. According to the creators, Chris Jorgensen (“The Brains”) and Andi Greisel (“The Hacker”) of the Game Dock, as long as a game works on the iCade system, the game will work on the Game Dock.
In order to get these things into the real world and out the door, the creators are asking for $50,000 of funding on Kickstarter @ $100 per person. The early supporters will score a spot near the front of the line for the first production run. To us, the hours of enjoyment that can be had from such a device are well worth the $100.
That said, as awesome as the Game Dock is (and other similar accessories), we agree with iMore’s Chris Oldroyd when he says that he wishes Apple would make some sort of standard, official hardware for developers to build on. With Apple’s support, the retro and casual gaming space could explode thanks to a unified piece of hardware(s). Until then, however, we have things like the Game Dock.
