While it is extremely rare (read: near impossible) to physically damage a device beyond repair by unlocking the bootloader, manufacturers err on the side of absurdity. It’s nothing new. Still, Sony has made sure to reiterate their stance.
According to the Xperia Blog, UK and Dutch Sony Xperia customers in particular are getting back broken units with messages saying their device was denied repair due to an “illegal unlock” of the bootloader. The issue in question for the particular device highlighted by the Xperia Blog was a yellow tint on the user’s display – hardly something that would be caused by an unlocked bootloader.
Thinking of being clever and re-locking the bootloader before you send it in? Great. It won’t work. Apparently Sony can see when a bootloader has been unlocked.
While Sony seemingly supports unlocking your bootloader at your own risk, they do not support the device for repair work, for anything, even if the problem in question isn’t caused by the simple act of unlocking the bootloader to begin with.
Let us say what doesn’t need to be said (again): unlock and root your Android devices at your own risk because stuff like this will probably happen.
