Big Story Weather from August 15: Yesterday was a big day for hail as many places in the Northeast from New Jersey to Long Island New York had hail averaging in size of 1.0in. A second area of hail reports set up from Western Minnesota into Western Iowa. There were multiple wind damage reports from the New Jersey and New York Long Island area. Wind reports were scattered all up and down the east coast along the frontal boundary and then a few more isolated cases back in WI and also along the Gulf Coast.
Big Story Weather Outlook for August 16: A few remaining showers in place over Maine, otherwise the remainder of the East Coast including New York is going to have an nice day as temps hit the upper 80’s in many places. The Southeast will be fairly dry except for the Lower Mississippi Valley and Gulf Coast region were thunderstorms will form this afternoon in places like Memphis where the highs will be in the lower 90’s. Another area of High pressure is setting up over the Northern Plains bringing some very cool autumn-like weather for places like Fargo where high temps will be in the Mid 70’s. The entire western half of the United States will see fair conditions except for some thunderstorms in the Southwest region along the monsoonal trough. High temps will be in the upper 80’s for Portland and the mid 90’s for Phoenix.
Big Story Weather International Outlook: Partly cloudy skies will prevail from Japan back into the Korea’s and then over Northern China. A frontal boundary will bring rain showers to the region of Shanghai. Kai-Tak continues to track into Southeast China bringing very heavy rains and strong winds to the region. The monsoonal trough remains active along India and the remainder of the Southeast Asia region. High pressure over the Middle East and portions of Eastern Europe is making for a nice day with partly cloudy skies. A strong low pressure system is making its way towards England and Western Europe bringing with it scattered showers and extensive cloud cover. Low pressure area near Tasmania is bringing rain back into Southeast Australia today, while high pressure is building in over Western Australia bringing with it partly cloudy skies.
Big Story Weather Tropical Update August 16, 2012:
Atlantic Basin: An area of disturbed weather is moving over the Yucatan this morning bringing heavier showers and moderate winds to places like Cancun. Tropical Storm Gordon formed overnight and has winds around 35kts with a pressure of 1013mb. This storm will continue to track east of Bermuda and then make a sharp turn back towards Europe over the next few days. It is expected to hit Hurricane status and then gradually become weaker.
Eastern Pacific Basin: This morning Hector is still hanging on with all its might as it has winds around 30kts and a pressure of 1002mb, but it has been downgraded to a tropical depression and should continue to weaken over the next couple of days.
Western Pacific Basin: Typhoon Kai-Tak continues to track towards Southeast China and is projected to make landfall just southwest of Hong Kong with very strong winds and heavy rains which will lead to flooding of this region. Estimated winds are around 70kts with a pressure of 970mb.
Climate Watch for the period of August 11-15: A cool down is taking place for the Nation’s mid-section, while the west continues to be warm.
New York NY: Temps started out warmer by 1-3 degrees and the 14th they were falling to 1-3 degrees below normal.
Memphis TN: Started out 4 degrees below normal but the 12-13th temps went to about 1-2 degrees above normal, followed by another cool down as temps are now about 3-5 degrees below normal.
Fargo ND: Cool the entire 5 days as temps have been around 3-7 degrees below normal the entire time period.
Portland OR: Temps have been running a good 5-10 degrees above normal the entire period and even closer to 15 degrees above normal on the 15th.
Phoenix AZ: Temps have been running about 5-10 degrees above normal, with a slight cool down starting on the 15th as temps fell to around 5-8 degrees below normal.
