Big Story Weather from August 8: The frontal boundary from Nebraska eastward into Illinois and Indiana caused several hail and wind damage reports, as well as southward into Kansas all the way into Eastern Texas. A second area of strong thunderstorms developed around the low near the Carolinas providing the area with damaging winds and hail. The largest hail was estimated around 2 inches and was found in Eastern Nebraska near the center of the low in the plains. Heat was found in the Southeast, as well as in the Northern Rockies for places like Billings and Spokane.
Big Story Weather for August 9: A frontal boundary is beginning to push through the Midwest which is going to bring to the area some much needed precipitation from Chicago southward into the Gulf Coast and eastward into parts of the Mid-Atlantic region. The Northeast will remain dry for one more day for places like Boston where it will be partly cloudy with high temps in the mid 80’s. The heat and storms will be in place again along the Gulf Coast for places like New Orleans where the temps will be in the lower 90’s. The west will be under high pressure again today bringing more heat to places like Denver where the highs will be in the mid 90’s. There will be monsoon moisture in Arizona again this afternoon. The Pacific Northwest will be dry and cooler today as places like Portland will see highs in the lower 80’s.
Big Story Weather International Outlook: High pressure ridging in over North Korea will bring partly cloudy skies from the Korea’s eastward into Japan. There will be a few showers with the monsoon trough, however the will be more concentrated over India. High pressure over England will bring nice conditions to the Olympics and also the partly cloudy skies will extend eastward into the majority of Europe. Southern Africa will see better conditions today as temps warm back into the Mid 40’s. High pressure will bring partly cloudy skies to the majority of Australia as temps will be in the upper 40’s for places like Perth.
Big Story Weather Oceans for August 9:
Starting with the Eastern Pacific we find Hurricane Gilma which has winds around 70kts and an estimated pressure of 984mb. The storm should remain over open waters and slowly start to decrease as it heads over colder waters. Another area of low pressure is found back near the Mexican coastline and the pressure is estimated at 1008mb with winds near 25kts.
The Atlantic Basin this morning is still dealing with Tropical Storm Ernesto as it is beginning to emerge over the Southwest Gulf for another land fall into Mexico possibly making it back to CAT 1 strength prior to making landfall. Estimated winds are near 60kts with a pressure of 993mb. A second area of Low pressure is possibly going to become another Tropical Storm later today as winds in this system are near 25kts and a pressure of 1010mb. A third strong wave is pushing off of Africa this morning and will also need to be watched for potential development over the next few days.
In the Western Pacific Basin we also are dealing with three areas of interest. The first is Tropical Storm Haikui which has pushed onshore over Eastern China but is still packing a punch bringing strong winds and heavy rain to the region. Estimated winds are near 35kts with a pressure of 992mb. The second is Tropical Storm Kirogi which is on a course to go through the Kuril Islands north of Japan with an estimated pressure of 996mb and winds near 35kts. The third is a new low which is near the dateline this morning. Winds are estimated around 15kts and pressure near 1010mb.
Climate Watch for the period of August 4-8: The excessive heat in the west has started to cease from the 20 plus degrees above average for some places.
Boston MA: The first three days from the 4th through the 6th temps were 2-7 degrees above normal, followed by a brief 4 degree below normal day and then on the 8th temps went back to 2 above.
New Orleans LA: The past five days have seen small variations in the season averages of either 1-2 above or 1-2 below normal.
Chicago IL: On the 4th the area saw temps greater than 10 above average, followed by temps falling back to 2-5 degrees above normal.
Denver CO: On the 6th temps were about 6 degrees below average followed by a heating trend as temps are now running about 5-9 degrees above average.
Portland OR: On the 6th temps were about 20 degrees above average followed by a cooling trend that on the 7th temps fell to about 2-7 degrees below average.
