While most may see it as a place to hang out and catch up with friends, Facebook is actually growing into a hub to play games, according to a TechCrunch report.

The social network said that over 235 million people play games on Facebook, which is an 8.4 percent increase since January 1.  In all, Facebook has a total of more than 900 million members.

Facebook said it drove its users to Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play marketplace over 170 million times.

The social network relies heavily on Zynga, which hosts games like FarmVille and CityVille, to drive transactions on the site.

The company also revealed that its App Center has been performing well, and has been used by over 150 million people in the last month.

App Center is seeing 2.4 times more installs than the previous apps and games dashboard, according to Facebook.

“Many game developers find that people who sign into their mobile apps with Facebook are more engaged and spend more money,” Matt Wyndowe, a product manager for apps and games at Facebook, said while speaking at the GDC Europe gaming conference taking place in Cologne, Germany.

Facebook said that 65 percent of people who play SongPop on mobile are signing in with Facebook, and they also spend 35 percent more time and money on the app than those who do not use Facebook to connect to it.

Facebook users of Bingo Bash play 65 percent more sessions, and Facebook users spend eight times more money in the Diamond Dash games than non-Facebook signed-in users.

The company said that five of the top ten game developers on Facebook are based in Europe, compared to one out of ten last year.

The social network has over 600 apps available in its App Center from companies like Zynga, Pinterest and Spotify.
