Michael Harper for redOrbit.com – Your Universe Online
I’ve said it once before. I’ve even made incredibly clumsy references to a Radiohead album: Everything is in its right place.
Although, on second thought, if I were going to go down that path, perhaps I should have went with “Jigsaw Falling Into Place?”
Oh Hindsight, thy name is beach.
All these Radiohead references are meant to say, People Get Ready.
Things are starting to fall into place for an imminent iPhone launch, and for those who simply can’t wait another 5 weeks or so, you may be able to save up to $50 on a new iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S.
Sprint announced earlier this week that they’ll be reducing the price of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S by $50 in an apparent move to entice those who would rather spend $50 less than have the latest and greatest. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Best Buy was soon to follow, dropping the price of some of their iPhone models by $50 as well.
Now, MacRumors is reporting that Apple wants to get in on the inventory clearance game as well, offering would-be iPhone buyers a nearly $50 discount in their brick-and-mortar stores. Those who live too far away from an Apple store are out of luck, as this discount doesn’t apply to any online sales.
A “source” has revealed to MacRumors.com that Apple employees have been given the authorization to match the discounted prices being offered by Best Buy, Sprint and anyone else. Now, Apple will allegedly discount their iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S models by $49.01 upon request.
With these discounts, an iPhone 4S now costs $149.99, $249.99 and $349.99, depending on the size. The 2-year old iPhone 4 has now been reduced to an incredibly affordable $49.99, with a two-year agreement. As MacRumors points out, Apple isn’t simply handing out free $50 gift cards, so if you’re heading to a store to pick up a discounted iPhone, you’ll have to ask for it.
In doing some research into these MacRumors claims, I called around to 3 Apple stores in the Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas area. The first two stores informed me that they weren’t allowed to price match any offers on iPhones, with one specialist telling me that iPhones were the one item in the store they weren’t allowed to price match.
A specialist at the third store (which played punk hits from the 80s as their hold music) said he, too, had read the MacRumors article, and was able to confirm something very interesting for me.
After reading aloud some of Apple’s Store policies, he said this sort of offer is available at all times. If a customer can bring in an electronic or printed offer from a retailer, such as Best Buy, Sprint or Target, Apple will allow these lower prices to be matched.
I think we all learned something today.
However, since I had to call 2 stores before I got this information, I’d suggest calling your local store first before you make the trek.
iPhone sales, as you might expect, have slowed down quite a bit in recent weeks as everyone anxiously awaits a new model, which is widely expected to be announced on September 12.
Anticipation is also said to be quite high for this new phone, which is expected to not only feature a brand new form factor, but a larger screen and 4G LTE connectivity as well.
In fact, anticipation is so high for this 5th generation iPhone (don’t say iPhone 5) that one person on the interwebs feels the time is right to finally put up their original, unopened 8GB first generation iPhone on eBay. The going price? $10,000.
Good luck getting your local Apple Store specialist to offer a $49.01 discount on this phone.
