The fragment of the universe we can see in this video contains more than 400,000 galaxies. It was created with data from the 7th Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The animation, as vast as it may seem, only portrays celestial objects as far as 1.3 billion light years from the earth, a very small area compared to the observable universe which is 93 billion light years wide.
The project was created by Miguel Aragon and Alex Slazay from Hopkins University, and Mark Subbarao of the Adler Planetarium.
Scientists from Berkley Lab have now issued the 9th Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, which contains new data from the BOSS spectrograph, detailing objects from roughly 7 billion years ago, which is approximately half the age of our universe.
